Good call! Of course Jhonny Williams was an .84 on the composite and would take a scholly THIS year and not starting next year. Other than that, your point is spot on!

This is a great article which puts talent evaluation and the "star" rankings into perspective. Harbaugh is a talent evaluator and there is plenty of talent to be evaluated. In Harbaugh I trust. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/re...uable-recruits

As a counterpoint to Baylor/TCU, the BCS Championship game was played 16 times. Of the 32 teams that played for the title, I would say 4 were not outstanding recruiting programs: VT, Nebraska, Oregon, Notre Dame. VT, at the time, wasn't a big-time player. Notre Dame in 2012 was not particularly loaded with big-time recruits. And Oregon recruits to their system just like UNL used to do when they were relevant.
In the CFP, 3 of the 4 teams were obviously loaded with big-time recruits.
So, yeah, nice job TCU/Baylor. Maybe you guys will one day be the 5 in 36 exception to the rule.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Yeah, they had the #1 class in 2008. In 2009 they were short on numbers, but the quality was outstanding. 2010-11 were meh classes, but still top 15.
Auburn's national title team should probably replace Notre Dame on that list. Auburn was in full-fledged oversigning mode and cranking through 3* players. Then they got Cam. In a way, it's probably a similar team makeup to VT and Vick.
In any event, the larger point is undisturbed.
I think it's also worth few further comments on TCU/Baylor. First, both schools are recruiting well right now. They have higher average player ratings than, e.g., HARBAUGH!!! So, while they have been forced to live off the "3* Texas" diet in the past, that's clearly not their preference. Duh. Second, Baylor's "success" owes as much to scheduling as anything else. They are, in no way, a complete program. Third, TCU was really good last season, but their first two seasons in the B12 were 11-14. Their big break was falling into Trevone Boykin.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Are those guys not their preference or are they now getting ranked higher if they get offered by Baylor? In the story there was an unranked recruit that committed to Baylor, now he debuts in ESPN's ranking as a 4 star. Right there shows how suspect some of these rankings are. They are heavily influenced by who the offers are.
I know Talent is riding high about recruiting and Meyer, but I'm certain that if Meyer had classes ranked in the 20's, he would succeed bug time at OSU.

I still think the overwhelming evidence...OVERWHELMING evidence shows that recruiting rankings are pretty accurate.
Define what an "outstanding" recruiting program is please.
Anyway, I understand that "stars don't matter" these days. If M fans want to hang their hat on Art Briles, so be it. I'm sure that'll whip Urbie.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Your comments about UNL recruiting to their system in the past were spot on. I still think teams need to that..
One of the things that drove me nuts about Bo's staff was not the star quality they landed, but who they landed. If you play a 2 gap scheme with your DT's, you shouldn't be recruiting DT's who are 260lbs in HS... especially when you need immediate depth. When you bulk up a DE to 280lbs and play him inside cause you have nobody physically ready to play, you've recruited wrong. in other words, you don't recruit guys who are best at one gapping and getting up field if you run a 2 gap scheme.. and you especially don't recruit guys with short arms. Stars don't matter at that point.. scheme will trumpLast edited by entropy; June 25, 2015, 10:04 AM.Grammar... The difference between feeling your nuts and feeling you're nuts.
