  • The 247 composite rating -- the only consensus rating -- had Hilliard at 5*. And he wasn't a late signing.

Now, Darron Lee was a lower 3* kid and 36th in the STATE and he's on his way to being a top 3 round pick in the NFL. Same kind of player.

In any event, if they have stars, talk up stars. If they have an impressive offer sheet, talk up the offers. If they're Dytarious, then HARBAUGH!!!!

      That's the problem.

I'm not buying HARBAUGH till he delivers 11 or more wins at M.

Obviously, he hasn't done that. The chances of him doing that in 2015 are slim to none.

Sure, JH's resume means something but everyone looks good on paper. When the rubber hits the road he has to deliver and if I've learned anything ...... stars matter, after that offers matter, after that, you're looking at the Rich Rodriguez approach and that didn't work out too well for M.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

      • Did stars matter for Hoke? It's coaching AND recruiting.

Is Harbaugh not getting enough stars for you? The class is about 40% full, with the majority 4 stars. But he's now RichRod. Makes sense. I guarantee this class is #2 in the B1G by the time it's all said and done.

        • The majority aren't four stars. His four star guys are a QB, a mediocre running back, and a guy from our Cass Tech pipeline who would have committed to Michigan if our team mascot was a Ku Klux Klansman. His four star guys who wrapped up the 2015 class were another QB and a guy whose dad is a coach in the team. His lone 2017 commit is a guy who wasn't even the second best tight end on his high school team. He has pulled in 15 non-QB recruits, 3 of whom have been 4* guys, and one of those guys is Wheatley, Jr.

            So, stars don't matter?

            LMAO.

Look, I hear all the HARBAUGH enthusiasm. However, new day, new coach ....... who, BTW, has done nothing substantive to demonstrate he is going to win games against M's rivals and compete for championships.

There are two programs in the Big Ten with solid leads over M in terms of objective measures of successful football (osu and MSU) and two teams with a track record of solidly improving football (PSU and Minnesota).

JH has a lot of catching up to do ..... in recruiting and in putting solid football teams on the field that don't get their asses whipped on a regular basis for a decade. His success in the former is sketchy at best (yes, he's only been here 7 months, I know but I don't see a huge HARBAUGH effect here). He's an unknown quantity in the later. So, I'm not going to get too excited over M football until I see something on the field that's WAY better than the shit storms that Rodriguez and Hoke were responsible for.

I remember you making a guarantee about M having a top 20 class for 2015 when JH came on board. They finished 38th.

Penn State has 1 fewer recruit signed and is considerably ahead of M at the moment. And Franklin brought in strong class last season. Not sure what they're still in on or how many spots they have left, but they'll have a strong class. And Michigan State should finish above 250 for the the 247 Composite rankings which is a strong number, too (and they currently have a higher average rating per 247 Composite than M -- with 15 players to 10...and it should go up a touch today).

FWIW, I do think M will have a solid class above 250, but I think MSU and PSU will be there, too. I think it will be the first time in ages the B10 has 4 top 15 recruiting classes.

              The majority aren't four stars.
5 of 10 are. Put another way, he has more 4* commits than Sparty (for now). Though Sparty has a couple really highly rated 4s and some high 3s.

              • A big part of recruiting is identifying talent and a big part of coaching is developing that talent...

The recruiting services identify talent, give us star ratings/rankings along with high school statistics. Recruiting services also follow closely who has offers and who is participating well at camps.

                • M has 5 four stars out of their 10 commits, Sparty has 4 out of their 15. Penn State has 6 out of 9.

                    • If you can't tell, heh, I prefer the 247 composite numeric ratings to 4*/3* for providing a much better snapshot of the class because, well, dealing in ratings out to the hundredth over roughly a 25 point scale means you can see an 89.85 vs 89.12 instead of 4* vs 3*.

Ohio is 12 out of 16
13 out of 16. And, unfortunately they had to take a punter this year! And missed on the two best OL in the state and settled (IMO).

Speaking of Ohio, JH now has now signed/verballed more recruits from Prattville than the entire state of Ohio!

They then watch these kids in their senior seasons and then get to watch them at various all-star games against "like" competition. As I've said many times, recruiting assessments have come a long, long way in the past 10-15 years. In macro terms, I think they're very good, especially by January.

Regarding Dytarious, what will interest me is whether he draws offers from the SEC big boys. M has flagged him as a player of interest. I assume they'll take a look, especially at his senior season, and consider the merits of an offer.

                        • Getting Harbaugh was more long term thinking than the short term instant gratification. He's done a great job so far. But expecting some tidal wave of big time recruits was unrealistic. The last 7 seasons were extremely damaging to your brand. Right now the Harbaugh hire is exciting in the same way a CBS procedural is exciting. It appeals to the same type of demographics, middle age older guys who remember the glory days. Op posted a Harbaugh hype video about the Team, the Team, the Team. That really excites you guys, but that video had highlights that must have seemed ancient to these kids.

Once Harbaugh makes his own highlights it will be in a much better position to recruit and as it is you're still going to get a top class.

Lastly, you can develop 2 and 3 stars. Just because you maybe haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

                          • One thing I wanted to mention earlier [but didn't] that Talent brought up is this is relatively early in the evaluation process (more so the recruiting services than the coaches).

Everyones time table has been accelerated as every coach is trying to get to these kids earlier and earlier. It used to be kids got attention based upon their performance in summer camps before their senior season.

                            • I wonder if in four years, Harbaugh will get tons of praise for winning nine games in a season because he is overachieving with his lowly ranked recruits ala John Beilein.
