  • Tyrone Wheatley needs to take a page out of the parenting book written by Chris Spielman's dad.

    • Strange recruitment. Webb said before Sr was hired that Sr and Jr were probably a package deal. Webb and Wheatley are friends. Still, no talk or buzz. If this were the case you'd think he'd commit already. Any reasonable reason to wait?

      • The only issue with Cardale's decision is playing time this season.

The Wheatley recruitment will continue to perplex me until he finally commits to M. If he goes elsewhere I'll be flabbergasted.

        • Some kids don't want to. I certainly wasn't going to follow in my father's footsteps. (Which brought me to journalism just as Internet use was scaling up, so Ty Jr should pay attention and just commit to M already.)

          • Talent -- there has been no outward indication that Wheatley Jr. gives a shit about playing in front of his dad or at his dad's alma mater.

I would counsel any player projected to go in the top two rounds of the NFL draft to go and play. The school will be there and your career is so limited.

I would never counsel any player projected to go after round 2 to leave (except and unless they cannot improve the next year or won't play) because the NFL has no desire to fix late round draft picks.

              • I don't track the NFL so closely anymore, but:

                1. Round 2? You wouldn't include 3?

                2. QBs might be an exception. You put some developmental resources into a QB maybe if you took him in rounds 3 or even 4.

                • Cardale turned down roughly $3M in guaranteed money and the ability to freely hit the memorabilia market at the peak of his popularity -- and he will never be more popular. That's probably an easy and quick $200K. We'll see whether his stock improves or not.

My estimates are based on him being a 3rd-4th round pick, which I think was realistic. I agree that if he were 2nd or higher then he definitely should have bolted. What's done is done. Works out well for OSU, so I'm happy.

What's not done is M recruiting. Back to that.

                            • Was thinking the same thing, especially for an "ace" recruiter. Even as true as they may be.

                              • if you listen to the interview I posted on the Husker thread, Neal basically said he was a Michigan lean up to that point.
