The impact of pending NCAA penalties on recruiting tends to be influenced more by the what if scenarios dreamed up by the press both local and national.
The perception of Michigan and Rodriguez was influenced by an angry local press fueled by Rodriguez opponents who wanted to undermine him. I don't think the national press did any damage to M's image; if anything the national sports press was dismissive of the NCAA in pursuing stretchgate and supportive of M. Local recruiting was damaged by the local press, MSU benefited by that but the system Rodriguez was running and his record damaged M more nationally and regionally than stretchgate itself did.
I think were going to see the local press throwing more stones at osu and tressel. The national press is on this; whether they stay on it and talk enough about the possibility/likelihood of coaching staff instability, post season play and TV bans remains to be seen. If the national press DOES stay on this, M MAY benefit by the likelihood that the parents, coaches or advisor's of top talent HS players and the players themselves will think twice about osu when in the past they would not have. That doe not mean those talented players that wanted to play for osu will then go to M.
Hoke still has to establish he is running a winning program. Until he does that, M is not going to pull top talent out of ohio or turn potential recruits picking the top programs nationally toward Michigan. But the stars are aligning to put osu at a distinct disadvantage vis-a-vis conference play over the next decade and that will help return the college football universe to normalcy and re balance the conference record books distorted by a decade of cheating by a jim tressel lead osu.
While there are tears in Woody's eyes over the shame that tressel has brought to his beloved buckeyes, he knows that integrity and competitive balance will be restored to The Game when that POS who cheated and lied his ass off to falsely advance the value of osu football is booted.
