I think that the chance for this sort of thing to happen is highly unlikely once Gary's on campus and being watched by the compliance people. But his mother has talked in the past about how she understands Michigan isn't a cash-up-front operation like in the South, but that the benefits will come later, over time. He'll get a Michigan education and once done, and with football, enjoy a lifetime of access through alums, etc.
Which is not to say there wasn't anything going on in the background. It strains credibility to think that they surrendered thousands and thousands of dollars just over a college choice. Who knows? But the basic tradeoff seems reasonable.
