What's interesting about these departures is that I doubt seriously these were departures that the coaching staff suddenly became aware of.
Talk began in the late June time frame that there was going to be attrition and that M would have no problem taking 28 in the 2012 class. Now we know what the coaching staff probably knew well in advance - there were players who weren't going to stay; taking 28 was not going to be a problem at all.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

This wasn't a surprise about Barnett, he showed up in AA at 280 lbs this summer and it wasn't the type of weight you want. Injury isn't a good enough excuse... Tight end from the '12 recruiting class was going to help just as much as this guy...
Concur with Jeff; back when M had about 18 scholarships to give in May, Hoke was saying he was planning on taking a full class (25) back then... M has 24 to give now and won't have any problem taking 27 or 28 kids.

In general, will other potential recruits (good ones) see this attrition as a good sign for them themselves, individually, or will they see this as a yellow flag and a reason to be cautious about committing to M--perhaps until the jury is in regarding H & C.

Mac, I'm of the opinion that they won't see it as a yellow flag, given it means more opportunity to play or at least challenge for playing time. I think most players (and their parents, advisors, whatever) understand that coaching changes elicit some attrition.
For players waiting to see what happens with Hoke and Co., I think it wouldn't change much for them regardless. They were waiting and judging anyway.

The thing about Rodriguez's defections is that lots of them were either impact guys, or young stud recruits that were expected to be impact guys. Posada is not one of those. Stokes was once a stud recruit, but reportedly third string on a depth chart that is pretty decent.
Barnett's departure is the exception. We need tight ends. Miller and Funchess are projects, and AJ Williams is reportedly approaching tackle size. Kellen Jones not showing up hurts badly.Last edited by Hannibal; August 25, 2011, 03:04 PM.

"In addition, we have talked about playing for an offensive line coach that played the position in college or in the pros, along with a head coach that will have some level of flexibility in regards to the engineering curriculum."
Quote taken from an article on mgoblog regarding TX junior Tristan Nickelson who is on M's radar and apparently the whole world. His dad is speaking. Does the "flexibility" refer to coach's giving consideration to classes that might interfere with practice or something along those lines?
