  • The great thing, though, is that he has a brother. ``If she don't love me, her sister will.''

    • LOL .. thanks, Hack.

I just couldn't see any circumstances under which he'd leave the 49ers, and/or the west coast, to come back to Michigan.

Now, with the revelations of the discord in San Francisco, (Santa Clara?) and the timing of the demise of Brady Hoke, .. I think its a real possibility. He could be having the same thoughts that Nick Saban had when he coached the Dolphins... (Hey, I hate this .. I'm a college coach)

However, if he parts company with the 49ers, I do expect one or more NFL teams to pursue him heavily, and offer to make him a very, VERY rich man.

      • I just fear that he'll go back to get that SB ring. I am happy to have 5 years of Harbaugh. That would be great. But if John is a real possibility, that's very possibly a great solution. No facts clearly portray him as an inferior prospect save for the lack of college coaching experience. It's really only the intangibles that make Jim look great. John could be a better long-term solution.

The class of kids that were ONCE committed to M is going to be amazing -- *if* they don't hit a HR with their new hire.
It's going to very tough to hold on to the elite recruits given that those who competed with M for these guys are going to go full-throttle to get them on their rosters of commits by NSD. 15, 16 and 17 are likely going to be weak.

It is a foregone conclusion that there is going to be another 3-4 year rebuilding process post Hoke .

Let's just hope that M can decide on a plan and get a decent hire in place by mid-December or at least locked down by then ...... could be tough given all the obstacles to that. I'm not sure I understand all of them. Anyone?

          • I'm not sure why it's a foregone conclusion.

            (1) Michigan's roster isn't bare. There are some quality players on the roster.

            (2) A really good coach makes a world of difference. Elite head coaches have turned programs around in short time frame on numerous occasions.

If M gets a really good HC, the trajectory of the program will be plainly upward in Year 2 -- as in a legitimate 8-4/9-3 team competitive with everyone on the schedule. That pretty much gets you back to where you were for the bulk of the Carr Era. Years 3 and 4 should see M get to the "10.5" win region.

I look at what Dantonio did at MSU and Briles did at Baylor. Those guys arrived in Year 4. M name-recognition that dwarfs those two schools and the possibility to hire a coach with much bigger name than either of two guys had when they were hired.

            • I don't agree at all on a rebuilding process. In the event of a home run hit -- Harbaugh -- the recruiting class can be quite easily saved. Given the talent here, I would expect to compete immediately, and to be elite by '16.

              • Yeah the whole "3-4 year rebuilding" process crap is what we've told ourselves about the past 2 coaches to make us think that we need to wait for stuff to get good, when there's plenty of evidence of coaches entering much worse situations and turning things around immediately.

                • This recruiting class isn't going to make or break M anyway.

                  • Even Miles. Miles inherited talent at LSU. He's having trouble sustaining success, but given his age, he might not be around long enough to have to do so.

                    • Eh, LSU is just in a transition year, IMO. He's been 10-3 each of the last two seasons. And, really, he should have 2 national titles but for an unfortunate series of events that negated his biggest regular season win.

But, yes, I think M would be right back to 9-3 within 2-3 years at the longest with Lester.

                      • Harbaugh got things going at Stanford quicker than 3-4 years as well, and I don't think they had the bank of talent that Michigan is currently sitting on. I'm not saying that there is NC talent at Michigan right now, but like Talent said, there is certainly enough talent to immediately get Michigan back into the 8-9 win arena immediately, with 10-11 wins in the not-distant future.

And getting back to an earlier comment by Hack regarding JOHN Harbaugh. I'd consider him to be a good "1-a" choice, but I have sort of discounted the chances of landing him, considering that he just signed a new deal with the Ravens. I can't see him walking out on that to coach Michigan, as much as he may have a desire to one day coach at Michigan.

Here's a scenario that will make you scream: JIM Harbaugh comes to Michigan as HC, and coaches for 2-3 years, .. and brings in his brother JOHN, as an assistant ... then JIM leaves after 5 years to re-enter the NFL, .. and JOHN becomes the new HC ...

yes .. I'll go take my meds now .... :-P

                        • Do I want a 3-4y rebuilding process? F*** no but the probability that is going to happen is not insignificant. Look at the facts:

There is no history at Michigan in the last decade that the institution can make a coaching change in the manner you guys think, or wishfully think, is a better descriptor will happen.

You can base your claim that M will be back to 10 wins in 2-3y on experiences detailed elsewhere in CFB. Pretty sure there was a piece at mgoblog that shows coaching change failures are more prominent than the kinds of successes you refer to in Saban at Alabama, Harbaugh at Stanford and so forth.

There is a history of inappropriate outside interference in the football program since Bo left, and I may even have that wrong in that in Bo's last years as AD and especially in the last years of his life, I'm not sure he really wanted to or had the energy to keep fingers out of the pie. So, it may have been going on longer than even I know.

The program is toxic. I think it is going to be very hard to find a coach who is up to the task of a quick turnaround. M isn't getting the ideal candidate for that job - Jim Harbaugh. So forget it . Wasted discussion.

So, yeah, my view is that you guys are dreaming. The past forum posts that talent dragged up and is reveling in were based on the now clearly unfounded exuberance of the M fan base before RR arrived and before Hoke arrived.

This thinking that somehow M is going to make a home run hire and have M back on track quickly is just more of the same old shit. The chance of that happening is about the same chance of .250 batter stepping up to the home plate and hitting one. Pretty frigging low!

                          • Could be. Probably. But if they do manage it, the turnaround should be fast. No sense thinking it cannot happen. Not saying its likely, but its not impossible.
