Looking at his film, I see he's accurate and calm in the pocket. He doesn't hang on to the ball, but makes quick decisions and hits receivers in stride. Doesn't have skills that jump out at you, but could be the kind of QB that keeps moving the chains.
We needed a stud in this class, not a "game manager".
This will probably be true for as long as Brady Hoke is the coach. We really need stud recruits at the skill positions since our offensive line coach is probably a bum.
He comes from Birmingham Brother Rice, which is one of the top five HS programs in the entire state. And, he became the starter there during his sophomore year, and was the lone starter last year. So, the kid can play, and has received excellent coaching.
The question will be whether he can play QB at the B1G level. For the last 14-15 years, Michigan's recruiting 'strategy' has been to beat out the MAC for football talent. They probably did with Malzone.
Well, since he's already committed, he probably won't receive as many offers. Had he remained uncommitted he might have received more if other B1G programs thought they had a shot at him.
Notre Dame used to have a lot of influence at Detroit Catholic Central, Birmingham Brother Rice and Orchard Lake St. Marys. I can't remember the last time they went after one of the top players from any of those teams.
To answer Rocky's question, no. I think the coaching staff saw no other top QB targets that were mutually interested, they settled on Malzone who I hope was their top QB left. Morris not redshirting to go with Speight & Malzone in the past three classes leaves me a bit concerned about QB play after Morris graduates, who I like a lot.

You can't be serious. Maybe Rich Rod did when he got around to recruiting defensive players, but Carr and Hoke have definitely sought top-level high school talent. Hell, just look at Hoke's 2012 and 2013 classes. Not MAC level.
I'll let you ban hate speech when you let me define hate speech.
I thought Carr's recruiting classes dropped in talent his past few years ('05 - '08), in-state talent being lousy during most of those years hurt Carr too. It's possible Lloyd was honest about his potential retirement to recruits and that scared recruits away in his last couple recruiting classes or at least I hope.
There were some real letdowns like Grady, Slocum, McKinney, Bass, Zirbel, Mixon, Patterson, and Michael Williams from those classes. They looked better on paper than on the field. The recruiting years of 2005 - 2007 followed by the Rodriguez years really hurt. Dantonio came along and got a foothold in Detroit and Ohio. Hoke is still selling the Michigan tradition, but high school kids don't really remember the glory days. Michigan was ranked #2 going into the 2006 osu game, but that was a long time ago to a high school junior. The next season started out with losses to App. State and Oregon. It's been mostly rolling a boulder uphill since. The bowl win over Florida, Hoke's first season, and exciting prime time victories over Notre Dame have been among the very few bright spots.

Quite a few of those guys I didn't like near as much as rivals and the scouting services, I thought M was receiving the extra bump for kids having a M offer. Much like recruits from Texas, ND, USC and a handful of other schools do. It still happens but imo recruiting services have gotten a lot better and these recruits are scouted far more extensively and accurately.
IMO, Malzone probably would be a starter in the MAC by his sophomore year. He could likely start as a FRESHMAN at Eastern Michigan. At Michigan, he may get a shot at the starting job beginning in his junior year if he doesn't red shirt. Of course all that could change if/when Michigan gets a new HC.
Wants to be closer to home due to mothers health, Northwestern would benefit the most. ND, Illini would have a chance. If the concern is actually playing time more so than being close to home, M odds improve a lil'.
Doesn't USC have the ability to block him from transferring to schools where they don't want him to go? If that is the case, then they probably won't let him go to ND.
