  • That's the Borges-era offense for you -- swinging wildly to one extreme after the opposite extreme didn't work. Gardner might not have the best vision of QBs out there, but if he'd been trained from the start to give up on some plays after a reasonable amount of time, TOs wouldn't have been an issue to the extent that they limit the playbook and drain his mojo. In fact with a QB with suspect downfield vision it's even more important to make sure BEFORE THE SEASON STARTS that he'll throwing it out of bounds when prudent. QBs start with a short leash and earn a longer one, usually. Borges didn't do that with Gardner and he didn't do that with Denard. Unwise.

    • Borges just last week made comments that he wished Gardner would throw more "when there's danger there".

      • Gorgeous Borges has worked miracles with Gardner. However, it's clear he's not Cade McNown material.

          • Gardner's "character" has absolutely nothing to do with his game play.

He is simply not a college quarterback.

If Michigan had a top notch QB coach on its staff, they might be able to coach him up enough to get thru the season, but we don't have a top notch QB coach. I'm wondering if Shane Morris is looking at all this and wondering if he should transfer. Seriously

When the season is over, its time for Gardner to get the gold watch and move on.

            • I don't think Gardner is a lost cause. Those who coach him probably are but there is no reason why, with his physical abilities, he can't be one of the top 3-4 QBs in the Big Ten. It's #1 a swiss cheese offensive line and #2 an OC that puts him in bad spots. Oh, and he seems pretty dumb, too.

              • 4.6 seconds for Gardner? He's usually sacked by then.

I'll give him one more chance.

Beat NW or he gets the watch ..

                      • I'm sure he's a fine young man.

I'm just not convinced that he's top QB material.

I'm ready to see Shane Morris get the ball.

                        • You we're all in on Gardner before the year, what makes you think your read on Morris is so much better?? If Morris sucks, you gonna be clammoring for Bellomy? The Speight after that? I'm not giving up on Gardner yet.

                          Comment

                          • You can hang with Gardner if you like. I just think its a waste of time to invest more effort in Gardner, when at best, he has one more season with the Wolverines. In Morris, you have a kid who is a more natural QB, and has all the tools to play the position the way that Hokeorges wants to play it.

Yes, I honestly thought that given what Gardner showed in his last 5 games in 2012, that with improvement over the off season, he'd be one of the top QB's in the league. The signs were all there for that to happen. However, beginning with the Akron game, Gardner seems to be tentative, and plays like he's more afraid of making mistakes, than making plays. He's playing like he has no confidence in his abilities, and nobody seems to be able to help him. There's been no improvement since. And no, the one game against Indiana was not a sign of improvement.

As for the QB's as I see it shaking out now...

If Gardner leaves after this year, I see Morris becoming #1, with Bellomy chasing him at backup. I think Speight will be red shirt bait.

If Gardner returns, move everybody down one. Hokeorges is as loyal to starting QB's as Lloyd Carr was.

                            • Gardner's no fool. He'll be with the team next year. This time next year, he'll be looking at the completion of his master's degree all on M's dime. And getting to play football one more time. Despite all the comments from the Bullhorn Berthas, life is pretty good for Mr Gardner.

                              • Although Morris' redshirt has been burned, Hoke & Co.'s lazy incompetence never permitted the kid to get OOC snaps as they hung on for dear life against Akron & Uconn.

I think Gardner will look much better as 5th year redshirt senior but frankly Hoke and his coaches will be spinning a whole new set of issues to justify why in year 4 of their regime still we suck.
