Kids may say that they love the uniform changes, but they also love tradition, charm, identity, and the confidence that their playing days are going to mean something. I don't think that the kids have the wisdom to realize that clown-ass uniforms and tradition are mutually exclusive. The exception would be Oregon, who, as the first-mover in this shitty trend, established their identity as being the juvenile attention whores with clown suits. That hasn't worked for anyone else. Arizona State, Missouri, Maryland -- they went from crappy programs to crappy programs with clown suits. -

Tradition is important in our culture. Its important in familes. It's important in the culture of CFB despite the efforts of marketeers to make us believe it isn't with these constant uniform changes, the purpose of which is to increase sales of football clothing.
I'd offer that part of the reason for the increase in poor behavior in our schools and on the streets is a result of the loss of community anchoring. Part of that loss is attributable to the increase in one parent households, the lack of male mentoring, lack of self discipline and a generalized lack of respect for traditions.
There are places where self discipline can be nurtured and participation in athletics is an excellent opportunity for that. This isn't new to anyone reading this but my point is that it's easy to allow forces to chip away at important things that under pin the benefits of organized sports. Likewise it's important to advocate for them. THE Michigan football helmet and uniform is one of them. It would behoove Dave Brandon to respect that above his relentless pursuit of $$$.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.Comment

Regarding kids valuing "academics".... Wonder if that include kids valuing those programs which, in fact, have minumum academic standards, bullshit majors, people to do their work for them, limited expectations to attend class, etc. Just saying the door may swing both ways.Comment

Remember these are just Michigan's recruits that filled out this survey. So I'm sure they have place a little more importance on academics than say......OSU's recruits.Comment

Jeff: Just for clarity .. this is my view on "alternative" uniforms.
1. The traditional uniforms must stay as they are.
2. I have no problem with "alternative" uniforms being used ONCE per year, to perhaps commemorate an anniversary, or honor a player or group of past players, etc.
3. If it doesn't meet condition 2, then condition 1 applies. In fact, if I were king, we'd send all Michigan uniforms for all sports back to what they looked like in the 70's. Last year we did two alternates, Alabama and the bowl game. The year prior we did three alternates, ND, MSU, and the sugar bowl.

I've never liked highliter yellow. The link below does a nice job of picturing the history of M uniforms. I don't think the flashy yellow turned up until 1990. It's hard to tell exactly what year the maze pants were abandoned but they were obvious in the 70s. We've never, ever had a true throwback uniform and you can see in this anthology how frigging stupid the jailbreak jerseys looked when they were worn. Just awful. I'd like to see a real throw back, 70s uniform appear, then keep it that way.

On my large LCD I didn't like those helmets at all vs SC, they looked like an unfinished product, like a old car primed for a paint job.Comment

I accept that it's going to happen, but I'd much rather let Nike do it than addidas. Nike's got a much better sense of how to play with the shades and numbers and thickness of the stripes, etc. addidas is just random shit. The bleed-out basketball unis were a mix of the highlighter yellow, maize, navy and royal blue. DISGUSTING.
I do wonder why they dropped maize. What factors went into that decision? Any logical reason?Comment
