It means that he'll get a scholarship on years when there is a good bit of attrition after signing day. Hoke would 'award' scholarships to the preferred walk-ons via his discretion.

Alabama insiders feel pretty good about A'Shawn Robinson and Vanderdoes. That would certainly suggest Poggi isn't in their plans.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Tons of rumors about Poggi, a lot of them involving his dad interviewing for a coaching position at Bama. We'll find out on signing day whether his dad is coaching at Bama.
But I am still of the opinion that no news is good news. I think if Poggi were going to flip, we'd have heard it from him by now."in order to lead America you must love America"

There are kids who are given uniforms to be on the team, .. who run out with the team under the banner at all home games, who never even go to practice. For instance, if I were a fat-cat alumni/donor who wanted to see MY kid in a Michigan football uniform, even if he has never played the game in his life, ... the university will make sure he runs out on the field with a uniform on, and stands on the sideline. Why do you think that there are about 150 kids running out under that banner every week? They are not all on scholarship, nor are they walk-ons.
And they do that at ALL major universities.
Either way, what exactly does preferred walk-on status mean? Better shot at a scholarship, presumably? My guess is that any walk-on, if they're deserving, would get one regardless of previous status?

I have no problem in appealing to the vanity of big donors or to the "loyalty" of former starters. Hey, preferred walk on is what it says. If a scholly is available, then the kid gets it (or they can split scholarships in D-II).
I have a big problem in giving Fred Jackson's son a full ride when he always has been a marginal D-1 player. And as I have said often, just give Fred a $ 30,000 raise and pull the kid's scholarship. Let Fred pay Jeremy's way and open up a scholarship.

Nice thought, .. but keep this in mind: Fred Jackson and his recruiting skills just landed us one of the top RB's in the country. Green and his family directly attribute Coach Jackson's efforts as the main reason he committed to Michigan.
So, should his kid have a full ride to the university? Fred may have earned that one."in order to lead America you must love America"

If I've got this right, Poggi DOES NOT have to send in a LOI on Wed. I don't know when the end date for such things is. The start of the Semester?
Anyway, if Dad is leveraging a job with his Son, I would think that would absolutely bring the NCAA into the picture on his recruiting. As bad as something like this would be for a number of reasons having nothing to do with losing a top defensive recruit, if it turns out there is a connection, it is the height of recruiting gone wrong in the SEC and nationally.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
