  • Man. Hoke is really starting the 13 class really slow.

    • I think Hoke is developing a little bit of a metaphorical wink to go with that crabby press persona though, which is great. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Definitely he's no Paranoid Lloyd.

          • After watching the over hyped ESPN crap most of the day, I observed a couple of things:

            1. You could really tell the difference in maturity between the Stanford recruits and everyone else.

            2. Granted I didn't watch all of it, but none of the Mich guys had a big hoopla event and most were signed early and didn't care for the hoopla. Which is a good thing I think. This goes for MSU too, but Mich had a top ten ranking and most other schools had some sort of viewing in the top ten.

            • Update on the new scholarship situation(from ESPN's Brian Bennett):

Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Illinois confirmed to ESPN.com that they have given out four-year scholarships to this class. Ohio State and Nebraska also confirmed on signing day that they are giving out scholarships that no longer have to be renewed annually. Purdue, Indiana and Minnesota are still awarding one-year renewable grants.

              • Some talk that M has 5 OL commits and the last one is Jordan Diamond. Numbers wise, M needed a 5th OL in this class.

Michigan didn't land any undecideds. Those are the kids who have a big event on NLOID, generally.

                  • I agree with what Herbstreat said on espn yesterday. The last few years have just become ridiculous as far as all the hoopla involving national signing day and following these 17-18 year old kids.

And then you have people on here crying because some 17 year old or a couple of them didn't sign with there favorite team.

I also like what Mattison said yesterday. He recruits football players and don't even look at stars.

                      Greg Mattison on Recruit Assessment

“I don’t care about stars. And I really don’t. There are some five stars out there that I hope we play against. To me all I care is what we, our staff, when we look at the film and say yes he can play or no he can’t play. When we looked at this guy on film, we said, Wow, this is one that we want.’ I don’t care if he’s a five star, three star, or two star. Those are the kind of guys we want in this class.”

                      • Not to rain on your parade, but I doubt there is a coaching staff in America that approaches recruiting otherwise. They all trust the film and their own assessments. So, I mean, good for Hokattison, but in other news, water is wet.

                        • I'll believe that when I see Pope Meyer sign more 2 stars instead of 4 stars.

Agreed, not to "rain back" but there aren't many coaches out there that have had Mattison's success in the NFL as well as College, Jimmy Harbaugh and few others are exceptions. Coming from Mattison, it actually means something.

Hmmmm, so, by that logic, how many 2 stars did Hokattison sign, Liney?

I generally give you credit, Liney, as a credible poster. But if you think any staff at a major program is recruiting based on what Rivals or Scout says, then I was wrong. It's all film and their own judgment. It just happens that, well, 4* and 5* kids usually look damn good on film. Shocking.

But, man, feel free to tell me how many 4* players Mattison took vs. 2* -- he must be recruiting stars!!!! Good lord.

                              • They can say that, and it might even be true that Mattison came across a few five-star recruits he thought were highly overrated. But in the end what's highly likely is that the guys who have five-stars are also, the majority of the time, the guys that Mattison also thinks are great players he would like to coach.
