I think he's headed to Oregon. That was his 2nd choice after UCLA.

      • The kid has a great arm. When he throws, it doesn't look like he's throwing that hard, but 60 yards later, it comes down in the receiver's hands. I saw him in a few HS games around here and he was always the most talented player on the field.

I saw on a local site here that he might be interested in Michigan, because he has a family member that is ill, and wants to be nearby. But I don't give a lot of credibility to that source.

I still think he's headed to Oregon.

        • If you haven't seen it yet, Brian has posted a comprehensive article on 2024 "needs" by position. Recruiting is not something I spend a lot of time with so, how Brian goes about identifying returners, freshman already enrolled, guys that will come back/portal themselves, etc. is really helpful if you're like me. For those that do follow all this stuff closely, it's probably nothing new.

Of course, talent has already asserted M will crater in 2024 because (1) they are going to get hammered by the NCAA for being DFCs and (2) the talent level will suck. Frankly, I feel pretty good about 2024 after reading Brian's article. BTW, JJ is in the "Maybe," he'll be back bin. I've read a lot will depend on what current eligible QBs will be looking to get drafted and that there are a lot of them. Obviously, a college QB risk injury to increase his draft stock so, I guess we'll see on JJ.

FIRST OFF: DUNNO. Give or take Matt Hibner, who stopped playing in order to maintain a redshirt and transfer somewhere next year, Michigan is the last P5 team without someone in the transfer portal. This obviously isn't going to last, but I mention it because that fact combined with the peak COVID-shirt year means just about anyone could come back, or leave, for 2024. Michigan only definitively loses six contributors: Cornelius Johnson, Cam Goode, Mike Barrett, Mike Sainristil, Josh Wallace, and James Turner. I'm going to wave a wand and assert that the following players will not be back next year because their eligibility has expired or they head to the draft: QB: Jack Tuttle RB: Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards WR: Cornelius Johnson, Roman Wilson TE: OL: LaDarius Henderson, Trevor Keegan, Zak Zinter DE: Jaylen Harrell DT: Kris Jenkins, Cam Goode LB: Mike Barrett CB: Mike Sainristil, Josh Wallace S: Rod Moore The following players are in the maybe category: QB: JJ McCarthy RB: WR: TE: AJ Barner OL: Drake Nugent, Karsen Barnhart, Trente Jones DE: Braiden McGregor DT: LB: Junior Colson CB: S: Makari Paige, Quinten Johnson Aaaaand the following extant contributors (ie, persons who have played non-garbage-time snaps who are not DJ Waller or Amorion Walker) are highly likely to return next year: QB: Alex Orji RB: Kalel Mullings WR: Tyler Morris, Darrius Clemons, Semaj Morgan TE: Max Bredeson, Colston Loveland OL: Myles Hinton DE: Derrick Moore, Josiah Stewart DT: Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Rayshaun Benny LB: Ernest Hausmman CB: Will Johnson, Ja'Den McBurrows S: Keon Sabb That maybe category is huge in impact if not in numbers, and it's not out of the question that guys like Clemons or Benny could alight for greener pastures. But we have to put them in bins, and now they are in bins. UPSHOT Michigan doesn't really need a whole lot. The existing roster could enter next year with a pretty good shot at the Big Ten title. The only spots where things could get hairy is QB (if JJ leaves) and OL (if they don't get more than one potential sixth year guy back). But they can up their chances and set themselves up for down the road. Michigan portal priorities: Potential starting WR CB #2 or nickel Established LB Versatile OL DE DT Developmental QB. I'd expect them to hit on 1 and 2 and then fill two or three of the other spots to end up with a slightly smaller portal class than last year. [After THE JUMP: position by position.]
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

          • I said M will regress to their mean. That's 8-4/9-3 and losing to Ohio State.

            Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

            • M will need significant transfer help and JJ returning to win 9+, that schedule is pretty brutal.

That's the one wildcard. M has done well for itself in the Portal so far. That could help things considerably.

                  • 9-3 with that schedule might get M close to the #11 seed spot. Certainly in the teens ranking. Not that thinking that far ahead matters to me at this time. Winning the natty this year gives me enough satisfaction as a fan to last decades.

Dante Moore would be a nice pickup though.

The portal could be a two-edged sword for recruiting. For instance, if Dante comes in, then we're likely to lose at least one of Jadyn Davis or Smith. Dante will have 3 years eligibility remaining, and I doubt that the two commits we have now will want to wait until he's done. So, I think we lose at least one of those.

I didn't realize that DL's Grant and Graham were only sophomores, .. so maybe things are not as dark for '24 as I once thought. There seems to be a servicable nucleus of guys coming back where if the portal could fill in a few gaps, the D could be pretty tough again. That's a wait and see.

A lot hinges on whether JJ comes back or not. If he does, I'm not sure Dante will come here. Will he want to wait another year to be 'developed'? He's looking for real playing time, not mop up. If JJ goes, then the door opens wide for Dante. I'm still wondering about Donovan as well. He hasn't given much indication where he's leaning. He'd be a very strong RB1 should he return, but there are others who have been RS this year, waiting in the wings. Ben Hall and Cole Cabana are talented RB's. Maybe one of the three moves to slot?

I have no idea what the W/L record will look like in '24. Its the toughest M schedule I've ever seen. Texas, Oregon and USC at home are no bargain. Then road games at Washington, Illinois, and Columbus are as tough as I've ever seen. Yes, I included Illinois in the tough road games category, because they hate us there almost as much as OSU does. Its going to be very tough to qualify for even a 12 team playoff with a schedule like that. But, if they DO qualify, it will be well-earned. I don't see how they could get in with anything less than 9 wins. Most likely its going to take 10-11 wins to qualify. JMO.

Michigan AD Warde Manuel, UM's leaders and lawyers, are finalizing Harbaugh's contract: 5 years, 55 million, which will make him the highest paid coach in the Big Ten, as promised weeks ago. The ball is now in Harbaugh's court.

Ok, not that I care that much.

By the sound of it things....its not that rosey in Ohio right now, I'm sure whoever (RFD) will work it out down there, cleaning house or whatever is going on.
