And please, god, don’t tell me your persecution complex with regard to Michigan and recruiting agencies hasn’t morphed into me persecuting you, too.

    It’s sass. Nothing more.

      Hey everybody, have you heard?
He's gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing
He's gonna buy me a diamond ring

And if that diamond ring won't shine
He's gonna surely break this heart of mine
And that's why I keep on tellin' everybody
      Saying (yeah, yeah) whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa, whoa-oh

      • I understand, AA. Its all in good fun.

I just wish Mr Talent Esq. wouldn't get his shorts in a knot every time I question the recruiting services. Yeah, I threw the "but Michigan" thing out there, but part of that is because I know it will draw certain responses, and yeah, part of me believes it. Mostly because of how often it happens. But, that's neither here nor there.

Most important thing is how it all pans out on the field. Its been a couple fun seasons watching Michigan beat OSU with less talent than they have. I guess those results can be attributed to 'the size of the fight in the dog', more than the size of the dog in the fight. Can anyone explain why college football seasons end up the way they do? I can't. Where did TCU come from? Does anyone really believe they were better than Alabama? I don't. But.. its what we have.

Enough for now. I'm sure I'll post something else that will piss everyone off.

Yes. The teams with the best talent and coaching end up with the best records and win the most championships.

          • I agree in the case of Georgia, that's true.

TCU absolutely was not better than Bama. They were more deserving, though, as silly as that sounds.

Ohio State had talent but was a flawed team. Same with Alabama. Talent isn’t all it takes, but teams without talent just don’t win it going back decades. It’s like a recipe. Talent isn’t the only ingredient, but it is an essential one. The data supports that completely.

              • Can I say the following?

Yes, teams that win it all have to have great talent. But does the team with the most talent win it every time?

                and here it comes ....

No. Of course not. No one ever said that. It’s a strawman. You don’t have to have the most talent, just talent close to the top. Top 10 talent (top 9 to be exact over the past decade).

Please read what I said directly above about it being an essential ingredient, but not the only ingredient.

And, of course, the point remains that 247 (and others) are not tanking kids ranking to fuck with Michigan.

                        • And look, some team with talent at #22 (or whatever) may win it this year. It would be unprecedented in the playoff and BCS era, but it’s technically possible. It would be what statisticians call an outlier, and we would regress to the mean in short order.

This absolutely reminds me of “arguments” with Big Orange Junkie. Great guy. Bled Tennessee orange. Just did not think Tennessee got a fair shake from recruiting services, pollsters, refs, national media, the SEC office, well, anything outside of Knoxville.

And that’s okay. Fandom can color perceptions and cloud reality. It’s just not that big of a deal. Something to to talk about in the off-season.

                            • It was hilarious. I remember when he posted the letter he wrote to Mike Slive (misspellings and grammar issues and all) decrying that the refs stopped a Vol scoring play against Florida and called a penalty without throwing a flag. I found a pic of the endzone that showed TWO flags and a pic that showed the Vols had 13 players on the field. He first accused me of photoshop until I posted the URL to Sports Illustrated (where I got the pic) and then shifted to a “they would have never have called too many players on Florida. And after all, two of the Vol players were only marginally involved in the play so, let the play stand.”
