They probably know what they are doing insofar as tv in concerned. Having Maryland AND Penn State is going to force the BTN upon cable companies in Maryland, DC, and possibly NoVa.

Rutgers does the same in parts of NJ where the BTN doesn't already have a premium.

Long term they are going to go to 16. It's going to happen. This shakes up the ACC which is where the eventual 15th and 16th teams are probably going to come from. Like it or not.

If it happens, it's an airstrike against the ACC and Notre Dame. If Maryland gets out without paying the ridiculous $50 million buyout, Florida State may be on the phone with the Big12. Suddenly the ACC is a lot less stable and Notre Dame is questioning its move.

Look, I don't think this is Delaney's endgame. It's a move to destabilize the ACC and set the table for the prize I think he really wants: UNC. Probably wants UVA along with them but might not be feasible with the political situation there.

If Maryland successfully leaves without paying the full penalty, Florida State is going to reevaluate their position. And losing them would be a huge blow to the ACC's future.

...none of which guarantees Notre Dame, UNC or UVA comes to us hat in hand.

Maryland is a B10 caliber school (terrific research spending) and has really nice sports/facilities except the important one, football. They've really done up their facilities, going in deep debt doing so then they had to cut some sports programs to cover those costs...

I've always had Maryland and Rutgers as programs with 'potential' (not to be great, just good, better than they've been) as they've had underrated in-state talent (similar in-state talent to M or Illinois) but they haven't always been able to keep that talent in-state. Both schools are the only BCS school in their state...

Both of these schools might actually start to realize that potential soon with PSU likely treading downwards. Maryland and Rutgers both have always been hurt (in football) by PSU snapping up their local talent, along with VT, Ohio State recently...

Given how the B10 screwed up the last alignment of divisions, whether I'd like expansion might greatly depend on the actual football division alignment they decide on. Putting your rivals in the same division is a great start as would get rid of the unnecessary counter division rivalry games...

M belongs with OSU & MSU, which belongs with PSU, which belongs with Rutgers/Maryland... Need one more team in the East. I see the Illini & Wisky needed in the west. One of NW, Indiana or Purdue would need to be in the east, don't know who would most want to be with the other 'west' but the B10 needs to take care of whoever does...

Balance of power? If and when PSU comes back, they might turn it too much too a 'east' centric conference and not enough plains.

A 9th conference game imo would almost be needed, I don't like how little M currently plays PSU, Wisky, Illini. I liked playing them most every season and felt M had a bit of a rivalry with each of them. Expanding dilutes those former rivalries even more so a 9th game would help in those regards.

The University of Maryland is in talks to join the Big Ten Conference, according to people with direct knowledge of the situation. One said the announcement of Maryland’s move to the Big Ten could be made within days. Another said the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents was to be presented with a written proposal on Sunday, but has yet to vote on the issue.
