  • dean.. agree. the rust belt is about pro sports and the south (outside of places like Miami) is really about the SEC

    • I went to an SEC game several years ago...I thought NU fans were rabid about football (and we are)...they take it to a whole new level...I have to admit...life and death type of thing...saw a Georgia-Auburn game in Athens...trust me...they take football and tailgating to levels I have never seen...

      • SEC also does a better job creating hype. Listen to a CBS broadcast.... A 6 yard run comes off as the most amazing run that season. And the tackle, poetry. The BIG comes across too business like.

That Said, the SEC has a messed up view of student athletes and fair competition.

        • College football has a far more rabid fan base in the southeast. The SEC has a huge advantage of not having near as much competition from the NFL, NBA, NHL like the midwest and northeast. Even the Pac 12 has a ton of professional sports teams competing for their sports dollars. In the south, Nascar is the #2 sport.

          • I'm not sure about there being less pro competition, there are pro sports teams in Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, New Orleans and all over Florida.

People are just more passionate about the SEC.
            Atlanta, GA

            • Those pro franchises are all quite new with little history. It you look at the # of professional (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) sport teams (none in Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky), it's not even close to compare the two...

Florida has quite a bit but they are mostly Orlando, Tampa and Miami. Northern Florida is all college football. Ditto for Georgia, Atlanta is professional sports town but the entire rest of Georgia is all college football.

You cannot remotely compare pro franchises in the South with those in the North, Midwest, or west coast. Up until 1961, there wasn't a single pro franchise anywhere in a former confederate state. There's just no history behind most of those teams except for the Cowboys; there's basically only been one generation that grew up watching any of them.

For decades, college sports is all southerners had. And by pouring money into specific schools they had a chance to strike back at the damn Yankees.

                • I guess I should include the Dolphins too but Miami is not really a "southern" city; most living there are either immigrants or transplants from the Northeast who prefer Yankees to Marlins.

                  • Plus, Miami is an awful pro-sports town. They rival LA for Biggest Bandwagon City. In fact, they probably win that contest.

It doesn't help when you have a team like the Marlins that dumps all of their talent every 3-5 years.

I don't think they should be allowed to have a team.

                      That's true for Atlanta too.

                      • The best part about winning the Big Ten this year is that you get to play an easier bowl game than the fourth place team. Michigan and the loser of the CCG are going to get humiliated on January 1st.

                        • Entire B10 is set for a horrendous bowl season, PSU & OSU are needed to push everyone else down a notch. It was going to be bad with them, train wreck without them.

All the projections I've seen have ND in the Rose Bowl, so yeah...

                            • B1G Winner will play ND. B1G Runner Up will play Georgia.

                              Ouch.

                              • The B1G winner won't play ND if ND is in the MNC game.

There seems to be a lot of sentiment for ND v Oregon for the MNC. Of course KSU gets screwed but nobody outside of Kansas will gripe about that.
