I wonder if they were given the option of this or the death penalty or other sanctions

There IS a fate worse than the death penalty and that's outright expulsion. I don't know if that would ever be on the table
Jason- The Miami case, and you noted as much, isn't exactly a comparable situation considering it involved criminal behavior but also provided a direct extra benefit to student-athletes. I have heard the Baylor case raised a lot as well; but there, once again, there was a coach actively trying to hide extra benefits in the most appallingly shameful way possible.
There simply isn't a competitive advantage gained or an extra benefit or academic fraud or impermissible recruitment in this case. Maintaining the university's image is not, IMO, a competitive edge that did not exist but for the cover-up.
But thanks to public outcry and a desire to see Penn State burned to the ground, Emmert has made his power grab. Every indication is that Penn State is cooperating with the NCAA and has come to some agreement with them. But there's no longer anything to prevent the NCAA from punishing any school, for any reason, with no requirement of even an investigation or to allow the accused school to defend itself, so long as the President & his cronies in Indianapolis vote for it.

Just what one would expect to hear from a fan of a program that is so corrupt that if the NCAA really flexed its muscle, would be going the way of all other unethical corrupt programs.

"what did Penn State gain an unfair advantage by not reporting it?"
It's not just the not reporting it, its the cover-up too is why the NCAA is involved... You hit it exactly on the head when you noted how they'd be disadvantage if news about Sandusky comes to light in '98, '01 or whenever...

Hanni- I can't imagine the NCAA not allowing kids to transfer immediately if the program is hit with a lengthy bowl ban. Prob not just upperclassmen either.

Alabama just came off their third probation in 15 years, so hey, pop the champagne! They would still be classified as a repeat offender if something occurs in the next 2 years.
LSU just finished a stint as well
The NCAA has placed LSU's football program on probation for one year and handed it recruiting and scholarship reductions after its Committee on Infractions cited the program with major violations.
Keeping in mind that the same NCAA, which now says it has unparallelled authority to act on the Penn State matter, previously stated that in the case of Cam Newton, their hands were completely tied since there simply was no rule prohibiting parents from shopping their kids to the highest bidder.Last edited by Dr. Strangelove; July 22, 2012, 08:39 PM.
