  • I guess. I don't know enough about what he did or didn't do. My comment is more about the public announcement "we're keeping him'!" followed the next day by "we're firing him!" It's just incompetent.

    • Harbaugh v Meyer

Meyer has won several national championships. Harbaugh has done well in college and taken an NFL team to the Super Bowl. Meyer has left one job because of physical / mental problems, and seems to be cracking a bit now in a 2nd venue. Harbaugh has been rather steady physically and mentally.

Meyer is a great coach, but I'd rather have Harbaugh at this point.

        • So, Chris Webber is honorary team captain this weekend at Harbaugh's invitation?

          Good for JH.

          • I don't like it. Unless it comes with contrition for what he did and how aggressively he lied.

JH>UM? Srsly? Consistent approach for Dan, but does anyone else believe that?

            • I was in school during those recruiting wars, he was a tool and it was a huge disappointment when they lost out on Webber. It seems like a bullet dodged in retrospect but at the time it felt like they were never going to get any top recruits. He is still a tool.

              • Tragic figure and a product of a dysfunctional system, but nobody forced him into it.

                  • Personally, I always felt Webber was unfairly maligned. He should have been maligned by M fans for his travel and timeout against UNC and by the whole world for his chokejob against the fucking Lakers. But the Martin stuff -- I always had a hard time getting too worked up about with the exception of the lying under oath.

This particular month might be the only point in time you can actually say that with some credibility.

There's no question who's more accomplished despite Dan's efforts to equate winning 3 NCs to doing "well in college," but as of today it's an open question. This has been a very difficult year for UFM. But, if he gets through it then I'm feeling very good about the future. And, for the first time, I actually credit that "if" with something more than "so you're saying there's a chance" type odds.

                      • I am quite pleased to see the royal "us" gradually dispense with the noble pursuit of amateurism ginned by early 20th century mores then turned into the highest moral authority by the NCAA in the 1950s in a naked power grab.

                        • I don't think he ever recovered from the UNC game. Definitive moment of his life. In grad school, when he and Howard were on the Wiz, I covered a practice for an assignment. Webber hardly interacted with Howard. Gave me a very tentative Go Blue when I introduced myself afterward.

I haven't recovered either, frankly. We need to beat UNC in Crisler this year.

                          • Perhaps if M simply found the fucking shooter and prevented one open look after another for Donald Williams then Webber would have his title. I consider that more likely than M somehow creating a high quality scoring chance without a time out in the space of 10-12 seconds. Such is life. Coin flip games are inherently loaded with what ifs. But contemporaneously, I thought the defense on Williams was indefensible. I'm sure fancystats says otherwise, though.

                            • Webber can easily be forgiven for the timeout. He had a hell of a game other than that and he saved their bacon in that near disaster against UCLA.
