I'm not a great football mind, but even I know that on that kick, you tell your rushers to just make sure he kicks the ball. You don't even try to block the punt. You were going to get good field position and plenty of time even if you take a fair catch.
Dumb, undisciplined play once again kills Sparty.

Here's the thing on the roughing the kicker call ......
Dantonio and Narduzi have coached their team in such a way that it creates a collective character that is highly questionable. They'd call it tough but its not. It creates situations like this that are game changers, and this one was.
MSU wins that game with a coaching call that did not involve an attempt to block the kick. Dantonio will never understand this but MSU got exactly what it deserved in that game. There is a place for controlled aggression but that was not the place for it and it cost his team and his players.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Sad that's the way it ended up, but it was a great game. Hats off to both teams. There couldnt have been two better representatives lf the Big 10 this year.
Proud to have made it to the Big Ten Championship.

If the kid had blocked the punt Dumbtonio would be the toast of the town and everyone would be singing his praises. While a credible argument, I do not think it is a certainty that MSU would have magically won the game (without the foresight of knowing the result of the return) if the penalty had not occurred. Not saying they couldn't have won but time was precious and I don't think MSU had any timeouts left. And, while MSU only needed a field goal to tie, I'm not sure it would have been as "done a deal" as some may think.

Odd that the 42-39 final was the same score as M-ohio in '06. And very similar in that M was robbed (IMO) of a chance for a last-minute winning drive because of a ridiculous penalty (helmet to helmet hit on Crable).
I agree with going after the punt (in yesterday's game) in a low-scoring game, but the way sparty was moving the ball at will, there is absolutely no reason to take that chance.
Even if Martin didn't advance the punt past where he caught it at the sparty 34 (with 1:50 left in the game), it's still more than enough time to at least pick up 30-35 yards to get into FG range.Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
