  • Ultimately when you have 14 teams in a 10 team conference no matter what the setup, you will get some strange years and some soft schedules.

heh.. yes, but I was referring to the idea or regional splits in divisions.

This is correct. And things are cyclical. The SEC-East used to be stronger than the SEC-West.

          • If you flip Purdue to the B10 East, they will never win a division title. Whereas in the B10 West, if Wisconsin ever has a down year, there is a chance. If Jeff Brohm sticks around and Purdue has a senior heavy team (like 2016 Michigan), slight chance of happening.

With that said, I'd be ok with Maryland and Rutgers getting kicked out entirely because seeing M play those teams is boring! Though free wins for now.

MSU would also loudly object. They heavily recruit Ohio, obviously want Michigan, and also want eastern exposure.

Maybe they should've just split up Maryland/Rutgers into the two old Legneds/Leaders, I dunno.

                • It looks worse this year because of how bad Nebraska/Iowa/Minnesota are. And Wisconsin got two of the worst teams in the East (they played Michigan, MSU, and OSU last year).

I'm not sure things would be cyclical in the B10. The division with UM and Ohio has always been the toughest division. For their own reasons, UM and OSU want to play each other in the final game of the season, and that is the single primary cause of the perpetual imbalance. MSU wants to play UM. PSU, UM, OSU, and MSU are a geographic cluster.

The thinking was that adding Nebraska would help balance the divisions, but it hasn't.

I'd certainly support going back to 10 teams, but that is not going to happen. The other plan I like is having two divisions based on last year's outcomes, call it the first division and second division. Top seven teams go to the first division, the rest to the second. Play a six-game round robin, and then two random games against teams from the opposite division. The 9th game would be a crossover with # 1 in the first division playing # 7 in the second division (giving the top teams in the second division head-to-head matchups with the bottom of the first division). The two top teams in the first division play for the conference championship. This is much like English soccer.

Regional proximity is not as important as it was at one time. Once you get on a plane, who cares whether it is a one or a four-hour flight.

                  Oh....and.....fuck Wisconsin.

We kicked the English out and they haven't given us anything worth adopting since Benny Hill died. Even their beer gets isn't worth copying.
Just go back to 10 teams already.

                          • An interesting story line for the playoff will be if Oklahoma and Ohio State both end up with one loss ...and Georgia and Notre Dame both end end up with one loss.

If that happened, and one of each of those two sets of teams were in, which two would you take?

                            • You pick Oklahoma and Georgia. Easy.
Oklahoma beat Ohio State. Georgia beat Notre Dame.

                              • OSU would be in, they would have run the big 10 gauntlet.
