The Medium and growing (formerly Big) Ten

IDK how Kansas could possibly be considered moderate. They are considering selliing off their Tobacco settlement award at a projected $500M loss just to get the budget through this year, delaying pension payments, and essentially folding the Highway Fund into General. Revenues were $70M under projections for last month alone, hundreds of millions for FY16.



Its failing at every category on this list.

Kansas is cutting funding to schools and hurting them... Along with other cuts and decisions to many their expenses. Many states keep spending. I don't think they judged them on what they were cutting or decisions but on ability to pay debt.

I have trouble seeing the Big 12 staying as a power 5 conference down the line. They just do not have the cache or the staying power for there. I think long term the ACC is looking at a dicey future as well,especially if they cannot establish an ACC TV network. And they really might have trouble with that.

There will probably be 3 power conferences and a couple of Indies out there (Notre Dame, BYU).

As long as the conferences stay stable it is hard to not see that as anything more than a win for the Big Ten. Demographics are trending Virginia and North Carolina away from the South into something more northern like. Probably not looking at expansion until 2020 at the earliest. If the ACC can not establish a TV network (ACC ADs are already worrying they are falling behind the SEC and Big Ten in revenue). If they cannot form an ACC TV network that gap is only going to get bigger and bigger.

2023 is when the new TV contract for the Big Ten will come up again. The Big 12 GOR expires in 2025 2 years of paying the B12 GOR penalties will be paltry compared to what the Big Ten will be raking in. So let's say the ACC does not get a TV channel by 2020. You are going to start to hear rumblings that the Big Ten will look to expand. It will probably be the last time the Big Ten expands unless mana comes from heaven (Notre Dame/Texas) barring that I think these schools are most likely to be added.

1) Virginia: Secures the rest of the DC market. An AAU university (important). Gives another eastern (heading to the South) university and another solid market.

2) Duke and North Carolina: This two would come as a pair no doubt about it. Both are AAU members. Neither one brings a whole lot with their football programs, but both would really add to the Big Ten basketball. Both would bring some nice markets with them (Raleigh and Durham) in addition to allowing access to some nice talent hotbeds as well.

4) Kansas/Georgia Tech: Kansas (despite all their troubles) is the better fit for the Big Ten. A member of the AAU. An extremely bad football team but an excellent basketball team resides in Kansas. Kansas in basketball is a naitonal brand.

Tech I think would only be a consideration if Duke and NC are leaving the ACC (remember the footprint of the big ten is contigous states). Not sure that the Big Ten would be thrilled getting #2 university in Georgia as well. Tech brings a lot of academics and access into the hot recruiting grounds but is not great in football or basketball.

Don't think we'll see anything till the GORs are about to expire in the ACC and Big XII at the earliest. Too much can change before then...

My guess is the B1G wants Notre Dame, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina and maybe Duke. Mutual interest among them is close to zero. Could see them taking Oklahoma with Texas, and possibly Virginia Tech with Virginia...

Don't think the B1G will do well competing with the SEC in Georgia (GT) and Florida (FSU).

KU?s fiscal woes aside, they really don?t bring much even under the best-case scenario. With or without the Jaychickens, the BIG is a powerhouse basketball conference, and basketball is just along for the ride on the TV contract bus anyway...football drives.

KU would be a net consumer of shared football gate revenue as well, to which we just added two recently. Those two at least bring a decent amount of cable subs, which KU does not.

The more I think about it, the better Oklahoma looks among a thin list of candidates. They are a national football draw, fill their stadium, and compete well across Mens and Women?s sports. They would add ballast to the BIG West as well. If we cannot entice the Irish or pry UVA/NC loose from the ACC, the Sooners are probably the next-best option.
