It might be different if he could SAFELY roam the sidelines, and actually make game decisions. But, right now he's only a caricature of his former self. I find myself pitying him, more than admiring him.

To PSU's credit, they have managed to put together a couple really good teams in the pas 5-6 years. But that program is way too inconsistent.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Penn State is reaping the rewards of Paterno's great coaching tree. Tom Bradley and Larry Johnson, Jr. could have easily been coaches somewhere else by now. Galen Hall has turned out to be a really good OC too now that he has full control of the offense. The fact that they have all stayed at Penn State in this day and age is incredible. Although Bradley could be staying beause he has been waiting for JoePa to retire. Fran Gantner made that same mistake and Paterno has outlasted him by a long way.
I hope that Paterno sticks around as long as possible too. They should be a dominant 10 win per year program, but they have a figurehead coach who doesn't do visits anymore, and 17 year olds today don't care how great Penn State's defense was in 1986.

I wouldn't wish that on even them, but for selfish reasons. I'd like a strong B1G again. Going through tough PSU and OSU teams in '97 was the way it should be.Comment

RR blew a golden opportunity, was over his head, over-rated, likely a combination of the three but he certainly doesn't deserve the "death sentence' that OSU has become. When they chose "Fickell" they likely went around the room at the successor's meeting and asked, "OK who doesn't have a criminal record"?
