The only way to change this outcome would be for Syracuse to do the old-fashioned, gentlemanly thing and forfeit the game. There is precedent for that in college football-- Cornell forfeited the famous "Fifth Down" game in 1940 to Dartmouth after they viewed the game film and realized they'd scored the game-winning touchdown on a down they shouldn't have been allowed. Of course, much the same thing happened in the Colorado-Missouri game in 1990, and Colorado refused to forfeit, since they were in the hunt for the national title. It would be refreshing to see a major program espouse the principles of sportsmanship over a win to that degree, but it's almost certainly not going to happen, and I don't think I can blame Syracuse at all. The game continued on into an overtime period where Toledo could have won it, so it'd be tough to ask Syracuse players to accept that they lost.
