  • fairly certain he must have had some cardiac workup while being seen for pneumonia. bad thing is unless he was cathed they wouldnt have caught it anyway

lots of echos, stress tests, ekg,s troponin levels never cath anything until the big one.

thankfully most do have a clue rather then just the sudden collapse

    • Even a cath won’t help if it were some irritable area of the myocardium. If the cath was clear, follow-up EP studies just are not done routinely.

....... and not enough of the time.

You may have seen these but The American Heart Association (I think that's the sponsor) has been airing TV spots encouraging people who have what seem to be benign symptoms that can easily brushed off as, "I'm just out of shape" to get a work-up for Atrial FIbrillation. This condition is way common and under-diagnosed in the over 60 population. Sleep apnea (yeah, you're partner tells you that you snore and stop breathing) is a frequent underlying cause when left untreated (CPAP) and sleep apnea is way too common as well.

Afib presents a 30% increase in embolic stroke risk. Sometimes, people don't even know they have the condition but when it occurs all the time (chronic v. paroxysmal) and you don't know it, a debilitating stroke looms.

Afib is a cardiac arrhythmia. A dual certified cardiologist and electro-physiologist (EP guys) don't always get involved with routine Afib cases that remain controlled. AA is talking about an irritable heart muscle - a different animal from an arrhythmia. These can produce ventricular fibrillation - it just happens and you suddenly pass out. Ever seen these portable defibrillators hanging on the wall? If somebody doesn't recognize the possibility that you passed out because you just had a cardiac event, get you hooked up to one fast, you just die. When it's diagnosed, one intervention is an implanted defibrillator - they can be life saving. Anyway, it's good to talk about this stuff
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • And to that end, Mike Leach is looking down and smiling that his passing brought on a discussion among football fans that loved him and CFB.

                  • Leach was easily my favorite rival coach. There haven’t been a ton. Him and Les Miles are the only two that come to mind. Well, Lane, but I still struggle to consider him a rival coach.

                    • I always wanted him to coach UNL...not sure what we would have seen on the field...but the press conferences would have been worth it...

                      • Yeah, I think he would have done well at Nebraska.

You have to wonder how he would have done at a traditional power. Coaching in Lubbock, Pullman, and Starkville are three tough gigs. The thing is, his quirkiness doesn’t lend itself to the more staid bluebloods.
