  • VaTech and Fuente part ways.

Justin Fuente compiled a 43-31 record while at Virginia Tech, with his tenure starting with a bowl game win and ACC Coach of the Year honors.

    • It's a shame. He's a good coach, and I hope he lands somewhere where he has better luck and is a better fit. Fuente looked to be the best hire VT could realistically have made back in 2015. In this coaching market, it's going to be difficult to do that again.

      • Hugh Freeze would win anywhere he goes. Despite his ethical lapses, he is a very good coach. Would VaTech take him and his baggage?

        • No. I feel fairly confident that's not going to happen. I don't know the current decision-makers at VT the way I have known some in the past, so I could be wrong, but there would be significant pushback if the search landed on Freeze. After a couple of years of a divided fanbase, VT is looking to re-energize the program with a unifying hire, and Freeze wouldn't be that guy.

There's been quite a lot of chatter about interest in Charles Huff at Marshall, as he's a graduate of Hampton and reputedly an ace recruiter. VT badly needs to upgrade in-state recruiting, and Huff would figure to help there. His head coaching resume might be a little too thin right now-- Marshall's 6-4 in Huff's first season, and hasn't beaten anyone with a winning record. But Huff is going to be on the list.

          • I think with what Bill Clark has done at UAB, I have no idea why he doesn’t get more mentions. He recruits to a commuter school whose program was cancelled for two years that is within a half day’s drive from 7 SEC schools and about a dozen G5, D1AA, or DII schools. Never had a losing record - even in the season after the administration’s 2-year shuttering.

            • Your constant desire to hamstring the program at UAB is noted.

Seriously, I think the reason he doesn't come up more in these discussions is that he's been so loyal to UAB. I'd hope VT talks to him, but he doesn't have much coaching history outside of the state of Alabama. Sometimes, a guy is right to stay where he is.

                • Anyway, I have no animus toward UAB football. Really, It’s just there are a few small school coaches I don’t want in the SEC: Billy Napier, Hugh Freeze, and Bill Clark are on that list. If they sign a contract with a ACC school, the move to an SEC school is at least delayed.

I would also like Lane Kiffin to take the Miami job. Perfect fit and he still has a house in Boca.

                      • No idea if it’s realistic, but I think V-Tech should go after Shane Beamer. Keep it in the family!
V-Tech is one of those programs that I randomly enjoy when they are relevant in college football. Hope they get it right!

                        • I respect the attention to detail AA has in regards to keeping these fellas out of the SEC. Like it matters to Alabama who is coaching in the Big 1 Medium 1 Little 14 conference.

Yes, despite Georgia barreling toward a NC this year, and LSU winning one 2 years back as well as Alabama being relegated to some depressing also-ran bowl in Florida against a non-descript opponent that year, the fact remains that Saban has 24 losses in his 15 years at Alabama and a full two-thirds of those losses are against SEC teams. Their improvement does not serve the Dark Lord and therefore it must be vanquished.
