Also, no one's talking about how the glorious knights of Cornell beat that toothpaste school.

Marshall
Old Dominion
Florida International
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee
Louisiana Tech
Southern Miss
UTEP

The Top Ten
1. Georgia. No surprise here-- the Bulldogs easily saw off another challenge from an SEC foe, holding Kentucky to less than two yards a carry and five yards per pass. They're leading the nation in scoring defense by nearly six points per game. They get a bye this week before the Cocktail Party, and while this has been a crazy year in college football, it would take a truly remarkable performance by one of the teams left on their schedule to hang a loss on Georgia before the SEC championship game.
2. Oklahoma. The Sooners have found themselves midseason, defensive lapses and all, thanks to the installation of Caleb Williams at QB. This now is one of the few teams explosive enough to have a chance against one of the two SEC powers in a playoff game(Ohio State would figure to be another). The question here is, can they get that far? Their last four games-- at Baylor, Iowa State, Bedlam and the Big XII championship game-- won't be walks in the park. With this defense, any game can turn into a shootout. Well, except the Kansas game this week.
3. Alabama. The Crimson Tide did their best to convince me that the A&M loss was a one-off, rather than a demonstration of serious problems. So, they move back into the playoff slots here. The fourth Saturday in October features a visit from Tennessee. If Joe Milton has to start for the Vols, this doesn't figure to be all that interesting. If Hendon Hooker can play, it might be interesting for a half.
4. Cincinnati. Barring a total collapse of the top three, I'm thinking this is probably about as high as I can rank the Bearcats. It's also as low as I can rank them right now, because they've done everything that could be asked of them. They're destroying AAC competition and they've won both Power Five games by double digits. They're top five in the nation in turnover margin, scoring defense and pass efficiency defense, and they're sixth in scoring. To my mind, as long as they keep winning, they're a playoff team. This spot is theirs until they lose it.
5. Oregon. The Ducks are kind of messing up my ranking right now. They don't pass the eye test-- they look like a shell of the team that beat Ohio State in Columbus, and they needed a goal line stand to hang on against Cal. But they still have a better win on their resume than each of the next five teams on this list, so they stay here. I tend to think UCLA is going to take care of this problem for me this week. The Bruins can stop the run, and it's tough seeing the Ducks winning this one if the game is on Anthony Brown's shoulders as a passer.
6. Ohio State. Now we start our run on Big Ten teams, and we start with the most talented of the lot. Ohio State comes off the bye week fixing to destroy Indiana, and assuming that goes as expected, then we'll see how much of this hot streak was built on playing lesser opposition, as Penn State comes calling in a Saturday night prime-time game. Ohio State's second in the nation in passing efficiency. Penn State's fourth in pass efficiency defense. That passing game matchup figures to be good.
7. Michigan State. It wasn't pretty, but it was a darn sight better looking than some other folks' performance in conference road games. Sparty found a way to get out of Bloomington with a win. Now comes their bye week, and then possibly the biggest game for the Paul Bunyan Trophy since 1964.
8. Michigan. Michigan got a bye week, and now they get Northwestern, a team that can't do much on offense but somehow managed a more impressive performance against Rutgers than Michigan could. This shouldn't be close on paper, but recent Michigan-Northwestern games have been competitive, if often hilariously so. I'd think Michigan gets through this week OK. Next week in East Lansing is another matter.
9. Iowa. As bad a day as the Hawkeyes had against Purdue, I still can't see dropping them below a Penn State they just beat a week ago. So, they go here. If Purdue showed us the real Iowa, they'll be dropping down the list again soon enough. I'm not sure if that's the case-- I don't see anybody putting up the kind of game Aidan O'Connell did against this pass defense again. Purdue may have just caught Iowa at a perfect time and played out of their minds. Still, Iowa's got to figure out what went wrong, and they've got to find something consistent on offense if that's possible. They travel to Madison in a couple of weeks, and as much as Wisconsin's offense has struggled, the Badger defense is still good enough to win them a game like this.
10. Penn State. Penn State spent their bye week getting healthy and ready to poleaxe woeful Illinois. Even without Sean Clifford, this should be a one-sided affair. Then, as already mentioned, they go to Columbus, and we find out how good the Nittany Lions are.
Next Ten: Coastal Carolina, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, N.C. State, Baylor

MTSU and WKU have a ton of history together going back to when they were both in the Ohio Valley Conference for decades (another conference in FCS that may not survive much longer). But other than that, those six schools have no history together
Western Kentucky, MTSU, and Florida International all abandoned the Sun Belt when it looked like CUSA was going to be the better league. Maybe there is bad blood there, I dunno.
