The problem is that the NCAA knows that female athletes and small school players will get nothing. The 5-stars at the big schools? They become rich.

Imagine how much revenue Tua, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, etc, etc, etc. will get. It will end up becoming a recruitment incentive.

That is absolutely true. The money will largely benefit the "student"-athletes who will go on to make lots of money. I can think of some exceptions -- JT Barrett would have made a ton of money and he football ain't his professional career. Any number of recent M players are roughly in the same boat.

But, yeah, Kelsey Mitchell ain't getting paid. I won't even tell you who she/he is, but he/she was spectacular at Ohio State in her/his sport. And no one cares.

And then, once the Ds take over, maybe it becomes a Title IX issue. Woot! But, probably not if the school has nothing directly to do with the money. Even though it has everything to do with the money.

Bama had a softball player named Jackie Traina. She was a dominating beast of a player. She would get fast food money. Tua would be a millionaire from endorsements and likenesses and jersey sales, etc, as a freshman.

The Title IX suits will happen. And the imaginary degree of separation the schools say exists will be challenged.

Correct. Because, at the end of the day, we're about "fairness" and it's becoming more and more outcome driven. Tua getting millions and Traina getting free McDonald's monopoly game pieces wouldn't sit well with a lot of people. Traina is better at her sport than Tua is at his! It's not fair!

That is 100% guaranteed to happen if this becomes a thing.

The NCAA could be proactive and offer a plan where likenesses, jerseys, and a small share of TV money is put in an escrow account and dispersed evenly at the end of the year.

But with 500,000 athletes in the NCAA, a full billion dollars in the account every year would equal just a $2000 distribution ($1400 after taxes). Not sure that would make the superstars happy whose likenesses generated millions of dollars.

So many problems could be solved simply by decriminalizing payments made to players. Borderline NFL players could be incentivized to stay. Compliance departments could be done away with. Differences in fan culture's approach to cheating would be eliminated as a source of competitive disparity. And you would have no Title IX issues. You could establish rules so that players couldn't get "official" payments like endorsements or signing contracts, but if a guy wants to get paid a $300,000 advance to attend university XYZ then you ignore it.

My guess on the outcome of this is that the bidding war for 5* players would border on professional money. 7 figures for a guy like Rashan Gary to stay for his senior year. Stuff like that. Rich, millionaire donors would probably be willing to spend a lot more money, knowing that they are having a direct influence on the outcomes for their teams.
