I like this idea. Delaney is proposing to make Freshman ineligible. The plan involves allowing Freshman to practice and work-out with team but play and travel would be restricted. 4 years of eligibility remains so, a player getting a degree would be in school for 5 years. Scholarships move to 92 from 85.
The first year accommodates student athletes not yet ready for college level work. Not surprisingly, SEC commissioner, Mike Slive, is strongly opposed. Bowlsby of the Big Twelve is for it as a starting point for discussions. PAC 10 commissioner supports it.
Delaney has launched a number of initiatives to compensate for the recruiting advantages that SEC teams have .... level the playing field so to speak. I would add that MSU's resurgence under Dantonio and ufm's work at osu have definitely elevated the BIG's national profile. PSU and Michigan, rising from the ashes of their separate debacles, should help advance national dialogue about the BIG.
Delaney makes a point that he won't go with this proposal alone ..... making it highly unlikely it will become an NCAA rule.
