I actually like Les. He's a good guy, and does a decent job in maintaining what Saban set up at LSU.

    • Les is now 47-4 in Saturday night home games. The kicker screwed them when he kicked off out of bounds following the go-ahead FG with 54 seconds left. Everyone in the world knew Bama would take advantage of it and score. Great game by two very talented and well-coached teams. The difference between that and what Michigan does every Saturday is nothing short of depressing at this point.

      • That kickoff was spectacularly bad. Les needs to focus a bit more on special teams because he's had some kickers kill him in recent years.

Most of the few losses Saban has at Bama are directly related to bad special teams play.

            • Or an awful decision to send the special teams unit out. The FG attempt against Auburn was ill-conceived. But Bama lost that game when they got stuffed on 4th and short and couldn't stop Auburn on its final drive (easier missed FGs aside).

In any event, this doesn't strike me as one of The Nick's War Machine teams. They don't seem consistent enough on offense. I mean, they're still really good, but The Nick has had some infallible teams. Though, heh, one of them managed to lose to LSU at home.

              • Yeah, Sims ended up 20-46 passing on the night with nothing over 10 yards til the final drive. Credit him for stepping up when it mattered most but it's not AJ McCarron running the team out there.

                • Oh no, this team has a very average first year starter at QB, a banged up and injured O-line. On D, Ohio boy, Trey Depriest, is a physical beast but he is not close to the leader that CJ Mosley was. The secondary is talented but tends to get lost on multiple shifts and crosses.

Special teams is a liability except for punter.

                  • Depriest is good. But Alabama does a great job of developing LBs. Curtis Grant, IMO, could be as good as Depriest, but OSU sort mucked around and didn't develop him enough. Losing out on Depriest -- who played in a massively pro-OSU area -- really hurt OSU LBs. Jordan Hicks, too, who has developed into a really good player for Texas.

Raekwon McMillan is going to be ridiculously good. Darron Lee is an under-the-radar recruit who has a massively bright future -- he has the speed and football instincts to be a two-year starter for The Nick!

But last season not having either DePriest or Hicks was huge. And the Fickell-Withers co-DC approach was an unmitigated disaster. God bless Chris Ash.

                    • He's good. It's just that we need him to be the QB of the D like Mosley. So, far, not so much.

Urban is putting in his system. Watch tape on his first few Florida teams. The similarities are uncanny.

On the first play of overtime, Lane Kiffin dialed up a play that got the ball to a 304-pound offensive lineman in space. It was beautiful.

                              • Oh, I counted all the minutes on GameDay. Here are the results:

GameDay started at 8:01 Central and ended at 11:00 Central. By my math, I'm pretty sure that is, like, 415 minutes, give or take. Not sure what conclusion to make, but that's the raw data. Will have hot takes throughout the week...

                                DEVELOPING....
