  • I think Del Rio has his eyes on the Denver job.

Petersen may not be a good fit, and in any event is tough to pry out of Boise.

Sark fits the "Petey Caroll" image and managed to get Washington turned around a bit. I think it's a pretty good hire for USC.

Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
    Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

    • Makes me wish that we were getting rid of Hoke right now, since one of the best reasons for keeping him is that some other major programs would be snatching up the good coaches this year. Charlie Strong, for example -- I would have bet my life that he would be Florida's coach next year.

      • Sark is a lazy, mediocre hire for USC. Very unimpressive record at Washington. Doesn't coach defense. That's really the best that they could do?

        Really?

        • Yeah, Sark isn't a "must have" guy. I guess in that regard, it's a surprise.

Texas and Florida are still big dominoes yet to fall -- and they might not for another season.

In any event, Hoke and his ENTIRE staff bought themselves at least one more year with Saturday's showing.

          • We'll wait until all the blue chip programs have made their hires then bring in Stan Parish.

            • I thought USC would have at least talked to James Franklin at Vanderbilt before making the call. Interesting hire. I wonder if Washington will go after Franklin now-- Sarkisian's left that program in much better shape than he found it, and another good hire could put Washington back in the Rose Bowl mix very quickly.

              • Yeah, the SEC East isn't going to flaming poop forever. And when it comes back, Vandy gets whitewashed. Franklin needs to strike while the iron is hot.

                • BTW, Bezerklie, did you know you can come to Columbus next year to watch Virginia Tech AND Michigan play? True story.

                  • Sark seems like a "safe hire". Unlikely he'll be a disaster. I'm not overly impressed with his job at Washington but on the other hand...Willingham had devastated that program with some of the poorest coaching and recruiting in recorded history. With what's going on at Oregon it probably wasn't easy rebuilding from the scorched earth left in Willingham's wake...

...but still, this was Sark's best team in what? six years at UW I think? 8-4?

I looks like Muschamp has another year for sure. I haven't kept up to date on Mack Brown. That's basically it for now. I would have said Mark Richt too a while back, but it looks like he'll probably stay. What looked to me like a terrible year to hire a coach has suddenly become a really good one.

The guy that I wish we could have is Charlie Strong. I guarantee you he won't be available at the end of next year. Muschamp won't last until 2015 and Strong would be a stone cold lock as the heir apparent.

Wishful thinking, I guess. We're stuck with Hoke for at least one more shitty year.

Yeah Sark has been about on par with Rich Rodriguez the past few years. 7-6, 7-6, and 8-4, with lots and lots of opponents' scores in the 50s and 60s.

EXCELLENT. Parcells had/has a brilliant way of simplifying things.

                          • It's a strange year for hiring coaches. A hiring AD is always looking for someone with ties to his program who has had success elsewhere as a head coach. Sarkisian fits that model. There aren't a lot of other obvious fits out there like that right now. Strong to Florida is one, but Louisville is a school with underappreciated resources-- they can match just about any college offer out there if they want, and with their move to the ACC, they'll only be getting richer. A lot of the coaches at relatively less prominent football schools that have had great years are either older guys ensconced where they are(Gary Pinkel, David Cutcliffe) or relative newcomers(Rod Carey at NIU). I think some ADs might be reluctant to fire underperforming coaches in this market. Also, buyout clauses are obstacles in some circumstances-- Virginia really should be looking for a new staff right now, but they'd owe Mike London and company $11.2 million if they fired them, so that staff is getting another year.

True. If, as I posited, Bama's loss had come earlier in the season they would have passed OlieO at the end.
