I tend to agree. But I think they could be prepping the fanbase for a full ACC schedule.

    • That's my take. It's a trial balloon. If the fans are ok with dropping a rival to further CFP chances then perhaps they're ok with going full-conference to further CFP chances.

It's a canard. ND was in with 1-loss. And their schedule wasn't THAT difficult. Stanford, in particular, isn't that good and they got housed. ND's problem is that they are still very much a borderline top 15 team. Water finds its level.

I mean, Miami destroyed their OL and Stanford destroyed their DL. Wisky >>>> ND.

So, I totally read it as a gateway-type play. And, TBH, once then went "5-game ACC" it seemed foregone that "full ACC" was coming.

      • Has anyone been to Notre Dame stadium recently? I've never been but was talking recently with someone who has and has been to most of the Big10 stadiums as well. He said the history there is neat and all but the stadium in objective terms was kind of a dump and seats beyond crowded. Dunno if there's been recent renovations but I was a little surprised to hear that.

          • Alabama's schedule was certainly non-trying. And next year will be even easier. Almost appallingly non-competitive. So, they're almost certain to be 11-0 going into a home game with Auburn which, as we know, means they're in the CFP.

            So, it works for Alabama.

            • Lol bye week before @ LSU. vs The Citadel before vs Auburn.
Nice one, $EC and Bama. Same shit every year.

              • The point was Notre Dame dropping rivals "just like Alabama" - the fact that Alabama's regular season SOS was better than Ohio State's was the point. Or wasn't it? Perhaps I need more coffee.

Well, the neutral site game against Louisville will be really tough. And in 2019 it's a neutral site game against Duke!

                  Alabama gets it.

                  • What does a bye week have to do with anything? The B1G doesn't allow bye weeks?

So, the question is, will Alabama's regular season SoS be better than OSU's again next year when we swap Mercer for Citadel?

                    • Louisville, when we booked them, looked like a good game. They have dropped off some. Dook, in 2019, is a drop off from the Clemsons, VaTechs, Michigans, and maybe even Wva's we normally open with.

Well, it was my point so I can speak to what it was -- weakening your schedule "worked for Alabama" (to actually quote my three words). And if you read the article it had Kelly quotes taking direct shots at the SEC (something to the effect of, it'd be nice to schedule easy wins before our big games, but we have to play our rivals).

                        - the fact that Alabama's regular season SOS was better than Ohio State's was the point. Or wasn't it?
I reckon there's probably someone out there that said it was. Not sure. OSU's SOS is really high on the ones I looked at, but I those are partially or fully updated. I can't find what SOS was before the CGs (though, I confess, I expended zero time on it other than googling CFB SOS).

                        Perhaps I need more coffee.
                        Correct.

The timing of Bama?s bye week usually, if not always, seems to be before their LSU game. Why doesn?t M get a bye week before their rivalry game vs OSU?
M and OSU have true road games in 2018:
                          @ ND
                          @ TCU.

Can?t remember the time Bama had the balls to schedule a true non-conference road game. But hey, a neutral site game closer to Alabama always sounds nice.

                          • I don't know who these jokers are, but they're remarkably generous to Alabama: https://www.teamrankings.com/college...ate=2017-12-01

That said, going into the B10 CG, OSU was #3 and Alabama was #7. Sagarin, a confirmed joker, had it way bigger. But, I'm sure some metric had Alabama ahead.

They both get byes. And Auburn and Alabama both take effective bye weeks before their regional and now meaningless rivalry game.

                              • Most conferences let teams have input into their bye weeks. Usually, Bama has a bye week before LSU - and you do know that they also give LSU the very same bye week, don't you?

Playing two tough neutral sites is a wash with a home and home. The last Bama home and home was Penn State 5 or 6 years ago or whatever.
