    • Corny Greene and Dennis Franklin are two of the most underrated players in B10 history. On every top 10 QB list you get Illinois and Purdue QBs and never those two. They were both spectacular and running their respective iffenses.

Greene, IMO, is the most underrated Buckeye period.

      Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

      • I know of Cornellius Greene but not about him. Franklin, OTH, I know a lot about. I graduated in 1970, Franklin's first year with M. He doesn't even make the roster. He started in 72 and led the team to 8 wins before losing to osu in the final game of the season. No bowl game due to B10 rules at the time ......

Then, and THEN, Franklin goes 10-0-1 with that tie at osu to end the '73 season. osu and M tied for the B10 Championship. A vote was held by the Athletic Directors to determine who would go to the Rose. osu was selected by a one vote margin with MSU's AD casting the deciding vote. Franklin was injured in The Game and, according to reports, that played a role, fair or not.

There was all kinds of stuff that went on after that with the Courts (a law suit - that M did not join - to disclose the record of the proceedings and to do a re-vote was thrown out) and the Michigan Legislature threatened to cut MSU's funding and hold up accreditation of MSU's new Law School.

Bo was furious and that is an understatement. He was more pissed off after '74 when M, once again, did not go to a bowl game due to B10 rules. Dennis Franklin led teams recorded 20 wins against only one loss and a tie over the two years he started, without a single post-season appearance.

In that context then, Franklin was a wizard at running Bo's offense of the day which I hesitate to describe but it was a wishbone variant with the kind of QB options that were new and more similar to the read options in modern more spready offenses of today. It really was not a triple option O. Bo's offense, like most of them at the time, were run heavy and a forward pass was considered unique. Anyway Franklin was smart and really good at running that O. His skill was reading the D and getting the offense into the right play.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • Franklin and Leach were probably the best two option QB's that Michigan has ever had. Steve Smith (circa 81-82) probably was more talented than both, but had too much of a penchant for the wacky weed. He would have likely been booted from a lot of teams today due to stricter drug testing.

          • Denard ....... maybe not as technically competent as those two but good God, he was fun to watch. If RR had gotten a RB as smart as Steve Slaton (who paired with Pat WHite at WVU) to pair up with Denard, who understood what RR's O was all about ..... well, you know, it wouldn't have made much difference because RR is definitely not alright.

Full disclosure ...... I was NEVER a part of the idiocy at mgoblog that kept defending Rodriguez long after it was obvious it was time for him to go.

              • Well, yes ...... the crying at one of the many press conferences after a loss ended that.

                • "Michigan Legislature threatened to cut MSU's funding and hold up accreditation of MSU's new Law School. "

MSU doesn't have a law school per se and certainly had no "new Law School" in the works in 73. The Detroit College of Law move to East Lansing in the 90's if I remember right. It is still independent but has some name affiliation with MSU.

                  • Yep, that's the one. Don't really know the extent of the affiliation then or now. I just remember something about a law school hub-bub over the Rose selection that year involving MSU.

                          • Bill McCartney, one of Bo Schembechler's former assistants, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Bill McCartney, a native of Riverview, Michigan, who led the University of Colorado football team to the national championship in 1990, has been diagnosed with late-onset Dementia/Alzheimer’s, his family announced on Monday.

I have a close family member who was recently diagnosed at 62 years old. This is an awful disease.

I watched the 30 for 30 a few weeks back on McCartney, his days in Colorado were absolutely crazy. With his religious believes, players troubles, his star QB knocks up his daughter. Then the player gets terminally ill and dies. And still wins a share of the NC the next year.
