  • The NCAA still mandates divisions, iirc.

Are you sure? I thought they made a change that was going to allow the Big12 to have a CCG? Or were they going to split into two divisions? But I had thought they had deregulated it to a broad extent

      • Maybe they did and I missed it.

        • Dsl... The 12 got an exception based upon number of members, I think..

I'd like to see msu move to the west with Purdue moving to the east. Create annual cross rivalry games in September so MSu plays Michigan, UNL vs PSU, wisky vs OSU, etc... I think it would add interest to the league and balance it some.

          • They won't move MSU out of the East unless there's a way they can play Michigan every year. MSU would insist upon it.

So would M, though I can see why they might be relieved to get an L off the schedule.

                • I say MSU needs Michigan on its schedule, more than Michigan needs MSU. Just like Notre Dame.

Without Michigan on MSU's schedule, especially in EL, their schedule is total crap. They have no other natural rivals, other than OOC opponent ND, which they don't play every year anyway.

And OSU doesn't qualify as a natural rival for MSU because of the "enemy of my enemy" thing ... a lot of man-love between those two ...

                  • And OSU needs M more than M needs them, amirite? So what do we need exactly?

                    • M and osu need each other just for the sake of the English language. The word 'rivalry' loses all meaning without that bedrock competition between the finest University in the universe and that diploma mill in Kentucky's upper peninsula.

                      • As Oracle correctly pointed out, perhaps with a smidge of sarcasm, EVERYONE NEEDS M and M needs no one.

Well for part (A) of your question, I'd say the short answer is yes. I believe this can be borne out by the results of last season where OSU took a nap against MSU, only to turn around and finally play a serious game against us. So yeah, .. I think they need us more than we need them. But I would not be in favor of ending the rivalry, or pulling a "Brandon", and have them alternate off the schedule. Even if we're not beating them on a regular basis, its nice to be able to remind them that they got stuck with Toledo in the Michigan v Ohio wars, and we got the UP. No scoreboard can ever even that one up.

And who do we need? Just 12 good games on the schedule every year. If Ohio were to get hit with the death penalty, Michigan football would find a way to survive. Probably better than vice versa.

                          JMO .. of course...

                          • I know the win in '11 didn't feel as good as when we beat OSU when they're on their game. Disagree 100%. "Survive"....are you saying OSU would collapse if we got the death penalty? We've been shit for almost a decade and they're flourished, are recruiting better than anyone and have reversed the Cooper years. I'd say they're in "OK" shape. Time to move out of the 70s.

No, their program wouldn't collapse. But if for some reason Michigan were not allowed to play OSU anymore .. what kind of regular season slate would that leave for them? Who would they play at the end? Pitt? Kentucky? Penn State? I can't think of anyone else that makes the impact on their schedule that Michigan makes. The same can be said for MSU. We are THAT GAME.

And besides, the guy who makes their gold panties would probably commit suicide ...

Oh I don't know. How about Texas, USC, Oklahoma. or some other such team that has been more successful than UM for the last decade?? Or MSU who has given them a better game than UM. Sometimes the arrogance of M fans is too much for some ardent fans.
