To be fair to Gary Moeller, the story goes that his wife made sure he had a few drinks, then told him she had been having an affair with one of the assistant coaches. She thought telling him in a public place was a good idea. It wasn't.

That doesn't justify him smacking her in the face, but that's what was behind it ... or so I've heard.
That's a common speculation but if you look at the police report of the event it sounds like Moeller just got wasted and was a super sloppy, rowdy, and mean drunk...

He sang loudly with the band and stumbled badly as he tried to dance with reluctant strangers.

He told the waitress who served him as many as eight drinks that she was beautiful and tried to hold her at his table before she cut him off.

He tried to pick a fight with another diner and shoved police.

And he used an extremely ugly epithet to describe his wife to police. She had left the restaurant earlier to protest his drinking.

    • Several versions of the story.

      • ...... and that's the problem.

Everyone has their version of history. It gets constantly re-written, often not accurately.

Bacon has no claim to the most accurate version. He simply does the best at packaging his.

.... and the Holocaust bears no f'ing resemblance whatsoever to the debacle that was Dave Brandon.

Get the fuck over Dave Brandon. Never forget the potential for evil that is resident in mankind.

        • Interesting take on M/Utah for this bettor.

For the M/Utah game, if the line is 5.5, he advises to "take the points." That means M will either win outright or lose by less than 5.5 (six).

That sounds like a very accurate take on this game.

          • Fuckin' right it's an accurate take because Michigan is gonna win the game.

            • "Michigan at Utah (-5.5): This Thursday game will draw big ratings simply because it's the Michigan debut of head coach Jim Harbaugh, the former Wolverines quarterback. Harbaugh still hasn't announced his starting QB between Shane Morris and Iowa transfer Jake Rudock. But apparently it's known to everyone on the team. Harbaugh says he won't announce it publicly until he has Utah's final pregame depth chart in his hands. Utah went into the Big House last season and won 26-10. This one won't be that lopsided. The pick: Give the points. "

Uh Jeff he says "give the points" which means Utah covers. No wonder you're broke!

              • Damn, you're right, Stan.

But, I'm not broke. Proof is that I've won every bet I've made with you.

I got so wrapped up in that bettor "taking" the points in the other games, I made the error.

                Anyway, I still think M wins by 3 and I'm picking a score of 21 - 17.

                Mike agrees so, there.

                • Lay the points. I say again, lay the points. Your post had me more discombobulated than Brady Hoke trying to figure out if his quarterback is concussed.

Between this quote and give/take the points, I recommend you never wager, Buchanan. J/K. Something about the above quote really cracks me up though. :-)

The conventional wisdom is probably that M has more backers willing to bet M than Utah so if LV is accounting for bettor action, and they typically do, the line is artificially depressed. It should be something closer to 7 or even 7 and the hook.

First week games are difficult to cap regardless and this particularly difficult to cap because there's the potential for M to be sooooo different.

Well, yes ..... and you make a good point even though it's implied.

If we are to take the comments from players and coaches, and all hype aside because I think, if you've been listening/watching, there's more here than hype, here's what I predict you will see in the game v. Utah:

A head coach wearing a head set, intimately involved in the game who makes the right calls.

11 men on the field for special teams plays.

A QB, no matter who it is, that doesn't give the game away trying to make something happen, outside the box Harbaugh has established for him as a player.

An offensive line that actually blocks correctly for the play that has been called.

RBs that see the running lane created by good blocks both at the LOS and downfield and hit it.

                              Open receivers.

Tight ends and more tight ends catching the ball repeatedly for good gains.

I'm ready ....... and I better not be disappointed.
