  • Wisconsin, #16. LSU, not so much. The chair of the Committee -- the ARKANSAS AD -- also went out of his way to note that the Committee was impressed with OSU's road wins against MSU and Minnesota. So, ummm, yes. It's pretty clear to all but an imbecile that beating a 10-2 Wisky team on a neutral field will help OSU. Perhaps that explains the question.

    Anywho, deal with it.

    • Minnesota. LOL God our conference is so awful this year.

      Just.

      Awful.

      • The Committee's ranking of Minnesota perplexes me, too. That said, they ARE ranked. And, for some reason not entirely clear to me, the Committee was impressed with OSU's win at Minnesota.

We can laugh all we want, but the reality is that the Committee views the Goofers differently than we do and their view is the only one that matters.

I now find myself in the sad position of caring about the Goofer-Husker cripple fight. A Goofer win should solidify them as a top 25 Committee team. Unbelievably.

        • It's a good thing that having a selection committee has done away with all of the politics and mystery of picking the best teams.

          • Well, I do much prefer this approach. Under the old approach no one ever reevaluated wins. FSU's win over Notre Dame would forever be a quality win. Mississippi State's win over shitball Texas A&M would forever be a win against a "Top 10" team.

I really like that they reevaluate each week from scratch and apparently emphasize quality wins. They seem more concerned with how good you were at your best than how bad you were at your worst.

            • The ADs aren't approaching it any differently, or at least they aren't doing it in a beneficial way. By being impressed by OSU's victory over Minnesota while discounting the horrendous 14-point faceplant against Va Tech, they are doing what people used to complain the old system did too much -- giving too much weight to recent games and discounting strength of schedule.

LOL. JTB should have just taken the sack in the final 40 seconds instead of heaving a desperation ball that was Pick-6'd.

That's not what they're doing. Whereas under your archaic view, OSU was doomed for all eternity when they lost a game to VT that came down to a last minute drive, the Committee apparently tries to take a more complete view of a team. I mean, if the penalty for losing an OoC game is automatic elimination -- as it was under your beloved system -- then let's all Baylor Up.

The Committee reevaluates its entire top 25 each week. In doing so they actually provide weight to the entire season. I applaud that.

I realize Ohio State is less likely than not to get to #4 even if they win out, and I'm fine with that. IMO, there's very little difference between #4 and #7. If the Committee ends up valuing a win at home over an 8-4 Auburn team and over 8-4 LSU or aTm team more than wins at a 10-2 MSU team and neutral field vs a 10-3 Wisky team, so be it.

Ohio State is a year away. This will most likely be just be another sucky 12 win season

It's no more complete than the AP, which has Ohio State ranked a mere one spot lower, vs. a one loss Baylor team that has a resume that is similar in quality to OSU's -- one shitty ass loss, two wins against ranked teams, and lopsided wins against garbage.

But hey, it's a "selection committee", so their logic must be airtight.

Personally, I wouldn't have a big problem with OSU getting into the playoffs as the lowest ranked one loss Power 5 team if that's what it comes down to. But if they hop over TCU because of recency bias or they hop over Miississippi State because the committe just doesn't want a rematch, that would be a travesty.

                        • Need a 6 or 8 team playoff. Conference champs of the power 5 should get an auto bid. Period.

                          • It's more complete than the AP for simple fact that fucking idiots like Drew Sharp have no say.

I prefer the Committee and what I think their approach is. I think the emphasis on wins is important. I like that an undefeated, defending national champ is 3rd because it shows they're Committee won't credit shitty wins (see Marshall) and because I happen to agree with it. I like that there is opportunity to build your resume and improve your standing. Ohio State could actually jump both TCU and MSU by simply winning and improving their resume rather than being forced to hope that both of those two teams lose because pollsters felt that on November 17th, TCU and MSU were better. It's not perfect, but it's better, IMO.

I agree with your comparison of OSU to Baylor. There's not much between them. I really don't think there's much between MSU, TCU, OSU and Baylor.

I also take some issue with Alabama at #1. They've been fantastic at home and utterly ordinary on the road. They were remarkably lucky not to lose at least 1 of 2 at LSU and Arkansas. They weren't even particularly good at Tennessee. Whereas Oregon destroyed UCLA and Utah on the road. Alabama has the better home win (MSU v MSU) and Alabama's loss is considerably better. So, it's a close call. But I could easily see Oregon at #1.

Anyway, it's going to be a fascinating run-in. If Mississippi State does beat Ole Miss then you're going to definitely have a real debate between them and a conference champ (or two). At least one of Baylor, TCU or OSU will finish with 1 loss. And I think there will be at least 2 1-loss teams battling it out for that final spot. Ordinarily, I'd say, meh, but in this year where I don't think there's a great team or 2, I think any team that gets in will have a credible chance.

                              • Oregon is probably a better overall team than Bama. Their O is lights out. Their D is shitty, though. How many games have they allowed 30+ points this year? Give yourself full credit if you guessed four. Some of that's due to their O scoring quickly, but most of it is just a very underwhelming squad of defenders. Still, I think their O is a more impressive strength that our D.

And, honestly, I hate the idea of playing Miss State again. We jumped out to a 19-point lead, and held on for a 5-point win, but a safety and three Dak INTs aren't really something you can count on repeating. Also, fuck Miss State. Nothing good comes from them being in the playoff. Hope they don't make it.
