  • AD: Ron English fired for language

    ESPN.com news services

Eastern Michigan says it fired coach Ron English after the school's athletic director received a tape of him using "wholly inappropriate language" while speaking to his team.
The explanation came a day after the school announced it had fired English without specifying the reason beyond its "commitment to our student-athletes."
[+] EnlargeMatthew O'Haren/USA TODAY SportsEastern Michigan's explanation of Ron English's firing came a day after the school announced it had dismissed him without specifying the reason beyond its "commitment to our student-athletes."

"We hold our coaches and staff to high standards of professionalism and conduct and there is no place, particularly in a student environment, where this language is appropriate," Eastern Michigan athletic director Heather Lyke said Saturday in a statement published on the school's athletics website. "The statements made by Coach English are absolutely unacceptable."
English had a record of 11-46 at Eastern Michigan.
"My decision to make a change in leadership of our football program was the culmination of a lot of factors including the comprehensive review of our program, the competitive performance and this tape," Lyke said in the statement. "Our primary interest is in the well being and success of our student-athletes and this will continue to be our priority in every decision we make and every action we take.
"My focus moving forward is on the quality of our student-athletes' experience as well as the search process for the next leader of our football program."
Offensive coordinator Stan Parrish will serve as interim coach. Parrish was coach at Ball State in 2008-10 and also led Marshall and Kansas State in the 1980s.
Eastern Michigan (1-8) hosts rival Western Michigan (1-8) on Saturday.

    • EMU Fires Head Coach For Insane Tirade Directed At Team

Ron English and his Eastern Michigan squad were off to a rough 1-8 start to the year and on Friday, EMU fired English saying a change in leadership was necessary. Today the school elaborated and the Detroit News provided the context: audio of a profanity-fest of a locker room tirade from English.
The audio isn't great, but you get the gist of it. English is pretty unhinged, repeatedly refers to his team as playing "shitbird football" and says he doesn't respect them, referring to the team as "quitting ass bitches" and faggot ass motherfuckers." https://soundcloud.com/bubbaprog4/media-0o

Here's the statement from EMU acknowledging the tape and its role in the decision to fire English, who's conduct was termed "absolutely unacceptable."

      • Somewhere, Jim Stapleton still thinks English should have gotten the Michigan job.

        • It helped Ohio State, but I didn't care-- I loved watching Stanford pulverize Oregon(at least until the final quarter). That's how I want to see Michigan play.

          • That's my dream too, JRB.

But after the season we've seen this year, that looks like its a long way off.

              • As in, "He has no interest in returning to college football" Jim Harbaugh?

                • I dunno. Did anyone in A2 bother to find out?

But, again, Harbaugh's going to have a coaching tree, and the early growth should happen in A2. IMO, take the current OC, offer to double his salary, and bring the OL coach with him.

                  • That would be a demotion. Those boys have their sights on a pro gig

                    • You know, it's a wonder colleges don't have to resort to getting the phys ed teacher to double up with some coaching duty, given that everybody wants a pro gig.

But, no. Making more money for doing the same job at Michigan instead of Stanford isn't a demotion. It's a lifestyle negative surely, but if it's about the job, it's about the job.

                      • Honestly, if you have trouble filling a job that pays 4-5 million per year with an alpha candidate in nearly any profession, you are a blooming idiot. Granted, timing is so important.

You could accomplish the same thing by grabbing the OC/OL coaches from Stanford, given their background with what Harbaugh started there.

Then, drop a dime to Scott Loeffler and see if he'd like to come home and coach Shane Morris.

                          • That's precisely what I meant -- take the OC/OL coaches from Stanford and bring them here. Harbaugh is the coach we need. The closest alternative is to perhaps bring in his people, which is what I've been saying for weeks now.

                              • I didn't say it in the post specifically because we were talking about Stanford, so maybe it wasn't clear, but, fuck -- any of them. Current Harbaugh staff or current Stanford staff. That's where you start looking for an OL coach and an OC, IMO.
