So, you stop the clock, and let Wisconsin send out their FG team to kick the winning FG.

Now, what do you say to ASU who felt that there may have been a fumble on the play, that they recovered? Further, if you don't rule the fumble, how do you explain to ASU why you stopped the clock in a live-ball situation? You can't stop the clock to have an official's discussion, when doing so allows one team to set up a potential game winning play.

They just needed a couple seconds to spike the ball. That was the plan. Wisky didn't intend to run a play and kick a FG in 18 seconds. IMO, the Wisky QB screwed it all up by not having any urgency in getting his team ready to spike the ball. If Wisky had been lined up and ready to go with 10 seconds left like they should have and the QB is screaming for the ball, it may have forced the refs to act sooner. As it was, everyone acted like it was the middle of the 2nd quarter.

For the record, Wisky should have just kicked it from where they were at. They got a little too cute and it bit them in the ass because Wisky AND the resf executed the last 18 seconds just about as bad as poorly as possible.

They needed to act and make a decision, you're correct that it's much harder to do in real-time but they needed to make a decision on the play immediately, not wait 10 seconds to figure things out before spotting the ball. Whether that decision was to call delay a game, spot the ball, take some time to talk the play over with the other refs, etc. They needed to make a decision immediately and that cost Wisky a chance to win the game.
