  • Maryland has no comment, he's still on the team

Police were seeking to question Maryland running back Wes Brown about how his car was linked to a non-fatal shooting before he was arrested last week for allegedly trying to punch an officer, The (Baltimore) Sun has reported, citing a probable cause affidavit.

The document filed in District Court in Upper Marlboro, Md., says Baltimore detective Bradley Hood "stated that [Brown's vehicle] was the vehicle that was involved in the shooting," according to The Sun's report. The officer had been seeking to talk to Brown as a person of interest in the investigation of the shooting.

According to a police affidavit, Wes Brown was a person of interest in the investigation of the non-fatal shooting. "What y'all doing?" Brown said when police moved toward him after seeking to question him. "Brown then swung his left arm with a closed fist attempting to strike Detective Hood" before shoving him, the affidavit says.

The statement says detectives met with Brown, who has been suspended by the Terrapins, Wednesday night in a parking lot after Hood had discovered Brown's car and blocked it in with his unmarked police car while he waited for a tow truck, according to the report.

"Detective Hood told Brown he would like to bring [him] back to his headquarters for questioning about the incident that occurred in Baltimore City," the statement said, according to The Sun. "Brown said, 'Why can't you question me here?' "

Brown requested that one of his parents be present before Hood responded that Brown was 19 years old and didn't need a parent, according to the statement filed by University of Maryland police.

Brown then refused to go with the detectives, prompting the officers to move toward him.

"What y'all doing?" Brown said, according to the statement. "Brown then swung his left arm with a closed fist attempting to strike Detective Hood while turning around.

"Brown then shoved Detective Hood with both hands before fleeing on foot," the statement said.

Brown was later caught by police. He was also charged with misdemeanor theft and illegal use of wiretapping. Police say he stole a cellphone and used its voice-recorder function to briefly tape officers without their permission.

Brown started two games last season and was the Terps' second-leading rusher. He was listed as a co-starter after spring drills, which he couldn't participate in because of an ankle and shoulder injury.

"We are extremely concerned that one of our student-athletes, Wes Brown, was arrested Wednesday evening," Maryland said last week in a statement. "This is a matter that we take very seriously. We have been in contact with the local authorities and will continue to cooperate throughout the entire process.

"The University of Maryland has suspended Brown, and he is not permitted to participate in any athletic-related activities. Since this is a pending investigation, we will refrain from having any further comment at this time."

    • Was Johnny Manziel Sent Home From Mannings’ Camp For Being Hung Over?

Johnny Manziel was one of many college quarterbacks to attend the Manning Passing Academy over the weekend. But he's the only one who was reportedly kicked out of it for being hung over.
Rumors & Rants has the story:
Our boots on the ground in Thibodaux, La. — believe it or not, we have them — informed us that Johnny Manziel was sent home from the Manning Passing Academy on Saturday afternoon by Archie Manning himself. Our source, who wishes to remain anonymous because of his connection to the camp, gave us the scoop after Manziel showed up tardy Saturday afternoon after being out on the town Friday night. The Texas A&M star reportedly enjoyed himself a little too much Friday night and rolled back into the camp at Nicholls State University some time around noon Saturday before getting the boot.
If that's true, [ame="https://twitter.com/courierchris/status/356196784386740224"]someone lied to a local writer[/ame], who tweeted that an official said Manziel was sick, and would not compete on Saturday.
Of course, Johnny Football is Johnny Football. He rallied.

NG is short for Northgate, College Station's bar strip. Hookah Station is part of the Northgate strip.
Heard anything else about Mr. Manziel's weekend? Let us know.

With a heap-o-talent that he can either parley into a lucrative NFL deal or fritter away with stupid decisions.

Here's the deal. HS grads can enlist in the Marine Corps at 18. They learn real fast that its not as much about them as it is about the team; they represent much more than themselves. They represent The United States Marine Corps. And that means something.

The best college football programs take kids and make them see the value of the team and all that concept means. Its a culture that is built over a long time.

I think there's a shrinking population of football teams that have not compromised some of these principals for making a shit ton of money. There are some that make a shit ton of money anyway and still embody these principals ..... Michigan, ND and Nebraska to name three of them.

Either A&M has lost its way, if Manziel's apparent behavior is a reflection of that team's culture, or he is dumb ass. Knowing A&M, I'd think it is the later.

            • He's no guarantee to have a good pro career. He's one of those to watch as a possible wash out in 4 or 5 years.

              • He's another Tebow, with the exception of his size.

He's not big enough to play QB in the NFL.

                • Did Denard get drafted and sign with an NFL team?

He'll sign an NFL contract alright ..... maybe not at QB, but he'll sign. I never thought Tebow was that good. Guys like Denard and Manziel bring some special talents to the football field.

                  • Manziel will be a QB in the NFL. Just not sure how good. He's not as athletic as Denard.

                        • The traditions are very cool, IMO. I also think they, like most SEC fans, have that southern hospitality. They also think everyone cheats so there is no harm in cheating too...

                          They've had bowl bans in 56, 66, 88 and 94..

                          • In fact, back in 94, some people were thinking A&M might get the death penalty as repeat offenders... Seemed liked over reaction, but that tells you what people thought of the aggies in the 80's and 90's

                            • A&M was SWC. Enough said. The 30 for 30 on SMU talks about how pissed aTm was when Dickerson choose SMU after the Aggies bought him a car (amongst other things). But, as they noted in the film, what could they do?

That said, the fact that Manziel parties is a zero story. Whatever. His family has gads of money from what I understand, too. It's clear that the NCAA wants to treat this kids as STUDENT-athletes, and that's what students do. If he were a professional and expected (or allowed) to dedicate 40-50 hours per week to training, then maybe he's letting his team down.

                              • Manziel pleads guilty to misdemeanor charge from 2012 fight

                                July 15, 2013 11:31 am ET

Johnny Manziel's lingering court case has been resolved.

Johnny Manziel's offseason of endless headlines continued Monday as the Heisman Trophy winner pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor charge stemming from his 2012 arrest in College Station, the Eagle of Bryan-College Station reported.

Manziel had originally been charged with three misdemeanors after College Station police found him and another man fighting on the street between 2-3 a.m. on June 29, 2012. After producing a fake ID and lying about his age, Manziel was charged with disorderly conduct, possession of the fake ID and failure to identify himself to police.

Manziel pleaded guilty on Monday to the failure to identify charge, reaching an agreement that would see him pay the maximum $2,000 fine, pay $232 in court costs and spend two days in jail. The judge ruled that Manziel had already served the jail time, however, when he was jailed following the arrest.

The other charges were dismissed as part of the agreement.
"He took responsibility for his actions that night and is ready to put what happened that night behind him," Manziel's attorney, Cam Reynolds, told the Eagle.

According to statements given to police, Manziel and a friend were walking home on June 29, 2012 when the friend directed a racial slur at a 47-year-old man. The man confronted the friend, and the incident escalated until Manziel and the man exchanged punches.

As a result of his ensuing arrest, Manziel was initially suspended for the entire 2012 season and planned a transfer. But a letter from new Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin helped overturn the suspension, paving the way for Manziel's historic Heisman-winning campaign as a freshman.

Manziel's guilty plea comes just days after his surprising (and much-discussed) early departure from the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana.
