A coach having an affair with one of his or her athletes is highly inappropriate. Firing her was an absolute no-brainer.
Applewhite isn't even accused of having sex with a player that he coached.
He's known to have had sex with a then-student...it's not known who exactly this student was. But if it was one of the trainers as it's rumored to be, then that was basically a boss-employee relationship, and certainly firable. Unless you happen to be a highly popular assistant football coach.

Eh. Debateable. Major Applewhite doesn't hire or supervise the student trainers, and he probably has very little interactions with them. It's not the same as having an affair with a direct report. I'm not sure exactly where it falls, because it isn't nothing either. There is some professional power that he has which makes it more inappropriate than just banging some random student, but it still isn't as bad as banging a current player. You can make a reasonable case that he should be fired for it, but you can't make a case that if somebody disagrees with you, the sole reason is because he is a populr white boy. Bringing racism into it at this point is stupid. She me an example of a white man in charge of female athletes who had sex with one and didn't get fired, and then we can talk racism/homophobia.
Anyhow, I haven't heard any confirmation that this woman was actually a student trainer, although I suspect that will come out soon. If she wasn't, then this couldn't possibly be less of an issue.

If she was a student trainer then I would definitely consider it a firing offense because even if they did not report directly to him, he certainly had more than enough power to get them dismissed if he so chose and could exert pressure on them.
Even if she was just another student then there's still a pattern of misconduct within the Dept. Seems to have been enough that the BOR would call an emergency meeting to discuss.
Davin Bellamy, a three-star DE recruit from Chamblee, GA, visited Oregon this weekend and posed for an incriminating image he soon deleted from his Twitter account. In the photo, Bellamy poses with four beautiful women, two men and a bong in a recruiting scene straight out of He Got Game.
Doesn't seem too extraordinary. Probably a lot closer to average than most think. My half-assed D3 recruiting trips to shitass towns were only missing the girls. Lamentable.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]? Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
