  • How much does Hoke know about offense? I guess that's irrelevant, tbh. He needs to inject himself into the process regardless.

As a comparision, UFM was livid after the 2nd half shitassery against IU and has, apparently, spent some "quality" time getting after the defense and defensive coaches. Not that it's done a great deal of good. They still gave up 3 huge plays against Purdue -- the calling card of this defense.

Incidentally, I still can't get used to UFM's press conferences. I don't think any team has gone from one extreme to the other like OSU.

Coach, what can you tell us about your defense tonight?

Coach Tressel: Well, I thought they worked hard and followed the gameplan and so forth. We'll have to look at the film, you know, to see where we can better. You know, we always want to get better. So we'll keep working hard and studying and trying to get better and so forth.

Coach Meyer: I don't know. It's unacceptable. Just unacceptable. I'm going to have to get involved. We can't allow that. It's not Ohio State football. Just can't have it. It pisses me off.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
    Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

    • He needs to get involved, absolutely. Make some broad-based decisions about levels of risk acceptable, and take a look at this issue of tipping off plays via formations, etc. I'm not particularly good at spotting that sorta stuff, but it is obvious to me that defenses know exactly what Borges is trying to do. It's not just b/c Denard isn't a great passer.

      • There's not a ton that Hoke could have done differently besides retain Michigan's old staff. Once he decided to keep his offensive coordinator who wants his QBs to be Dan Fouts, he doomed the offense to be identityless and inconsistent.

Borges does seem to have a concept in mind for what he wants the team's bread and butter to be, and what he wants the constraint plays to be. His constraint plays are vertical drop-back pasing. Denard Robinson and our shitty receivers can't execute the constraint plays, and by now it's too late to work in plays that attack the perimeter of the defense. Borges was hoping that Denard would be another Cade McNown.

        • I'm just saying that we know by his decision to bring Borges that he's not a manball guy. He may lie somewhere in between the two extremes, and that's ideal. It seems that Hoke is still sorting out how much risk he wants to take on a regular basis. My question at this point is how much will he allow one Borges has a competent passing QB.

          • Good question. Too bad we probably won't get one of those until 2014, at the earliest. And that's assuming that Morris is the superstud that he has been billed to be. If he's not, then this program is going to be treading water for a long time.

            • I'm open to something that knocks me off my position that the defense is going to be absolutely incredible in a few years. I don't want to be unrealistic. But Mattison has one of the best defenses in the country now and he's doing it with mirrors. I'm so excited to see what happens when he's got a roster full of four-star upperclassmen who have come up under his tutelage. Agreed -- if Morris isn't incredibly awesome, that's a problem. And him having mono this year could be a major speedbump. But I suspect that Michigan is going to be able to win a lot of 17-10 games over the next few years.

              • Thank God this asshole isn't coaching at Michigan anymore. Putting a player back into a game who is so obviously concussed that he is throwing up? Unbelievable.

That makes it the first time in forever that I'm interested in watching a Maryland game.

                    • Oregon has 456 yards at half and USC had 410. Oregon has, amazingly, left 10 points on the field and still scored 34. USC is a dogshit defense, but still
