Fair.

Obviously my view today is colored by what happened in Lincoln last night but, man, I'm disturbed by the state of affairs in CFB as it relates to the Big Ten.

The SEC and parts of the PAC 10, are in the driver's seat with respect to recruiting. Few teams are going to be able to run Pro-Style offenses and simply blow opponents off the field because of huge talent advantages. Because of the recruiting disadvantages facing the Big Ten and most of the remnants of the Big 12, Michigan won't be one of those teams.

Perhaps, and based on what I've seen out of Hokeorges and ufm, osu has a nice combination of offensive style of play and talent to play with the elites of the SEC/PAC 10. M does not and I see MSU and Wisky being on the margins of the national scene along with Michigan. This is the sort of situation I think Martin was trying to overcome with the RR hire and, obviously, that didn't work out. Too bad.

While M got a break landing Mattison, the offense still has to score points. Borges has managed an offense that has not scored a TD in two games despite having one of the most prolific QBs in CFB history. That to me is a sign of failure and a stubborn unwillingness to play to the strengths of his offensive players. Talk about a coaching screw-up. You have one, in spades, at M.

And, I don't want to hear wait until Hokeorges get THEIR QB (ostensibly Morris). I don't think the Pro-Style offense they want to run will be dominant on the national scene because the talent the team needs to run it is going to go elsewhere. Tell me what future NFL QB (and thier handlers) want Al Borges to coach their kid? Elite RBs? Fred Jackson? Elite WRS? Give me a break.

Frankly the Rodriguez hire took the program in the right direction, albeit he was the wrong guy. I also can't say that Martin had a clue of this when he made the hire. Nonetheless and if he did, he had the right idea.

Very interesting post, Jeff. First:

1. There's no reason to think M can't be elite. They are very likely a Borges-dumping away. They'll get plenty of skill players. They don't have to have an orgy of skill-position talent like USC does in order to win a ton of games. Michigan has always gotten great skill players and can still.

2. The defense is elite with RichRod's players already. Wow is it ever going to be good very soon. That's exciting, and argues in favor of not overreacting and assuming a pro-style offense can't make it.

3. Yes -- Borges just has to go. It's not about having the wrong QB; it's about a criminal disregard of risk-reward ratios. But he's going to get his shot, so Hoke needs to accept that his attention is needed on offense. Maybe he wants to coach the DTs and play around with what he knows, but the offense is crying out for adult supervision. Mattison doesn't need help or supervision; Borges does. Whether Hoke likes it or not, that's where his attention must go.

4. I guess I get your last point. I agree that there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the spread, and that a bravely-into-the-future move wasn't a stupid move. It just should have been made with more thoughtfulness in mind, and maybe Michigan employing an AD who actually was capable of evaluating a football coach would have been a smart move. Or giving Martin a budget for a consultant circa 2006 or something. SOMETHING. It's the fucking golden goose for fuck's sakes. Put that one on the higher-ups and not just Martin.

Just when you thought the Texas A&M-Texas rivalry was fading into the distance, a fan visits their rivals campus and vandalized buildings.

At least that was the case this weekend at the University of Texas when students awoke to spray painted Aggie phases throughout their campus.

“The words ‘Howdy,’ ‘gig ‘em,’ ‘farmer’s fight’ and ‘SEC’ were spray painted around the Tower and the Flawn Academic Center. The Jefferson Davis and Woodrow Wilson statues also were tagged,” Graham Watson of Yahoo’s Dr. Saturday blog said.

The vandals also left the phrase, “Do you miss us yet?” on one building in red spray paint.

“It’s an awful long way to drive just to taunt your rivals, but the way the Aggies are performing in the SEC this season does give them a little something about which to brag,” Watson said.

Both Watson and Austin’s KXAN, who initially reported the vandalism, say that police are looking into the incident but no arrests have been made.

Right or wrong, I suspect you're right. Which is why IMO Hoke needs to forget about spending all his time with the DTs and supervise the offense very closely. It's not the converse of RichRod's inattention to defense, but clearly Hoke needs to be watching closer.
