  • I think Bama/Saban has perfected playing in the gray area of the rules but doesn't intentionally break them. I'm pretty surprised too about the lack of whistle blowers, all I've heard from former recruits/players (and even from a couple former coaches) is that its a very widespread issue but they never go into specifics.

    • What benefit does anyone getting illegal benefits have by squealing? It seems to me they would be forfeiting eligibility and cutting off the golden goose.

And those that haven't gotten benefits don't have much to report.

      • Some teams can benefit over the long term, by breaking the rules.

USC will probably be rewarded for their misdeeds by playing Alabama or LSU in the MNC game this year.

OlieO will probably be rewarded with a B1G Championship sometime in the next 2-3 years and play in the Rose Bowl for theirs. They might even qualify for the new BCS format 1-of-4 playoff berth.

        • Shoot. Auburn won a national championship by paying Newton 200k. What benefit would Newton have to squeal though?

          • I can see kids going where they get paid the most, especially if they come from impoverished backgrounds. They don't really care or understand about character at that age, even though so many coaches promise their parents they'll build it into them - after giving them a pile of cash.

A wise man named Schembechler used to say that he didn't want kids who took extra benefits, because their lack of character would no doubt show up on the field when it mattered the most.

And Schembechler never won a national title. As fine a man as he was, one of the greatest to ever walk a sideline, .. yet that little asterisk next to his name noting that he never won a NC, will always be there. Mostly because he refused to cheat.

The lesson that OlieO, USC, and others have taught us over the years, is that they can cheat and still win, and end up reaping long term benefits from it.

              Cheating is worth it.

              • Looking at the list of teams that played in and won NT's in the past dozen years is full of programs that have been hit with sanctions, on probation or should have been hit with major sanctions. With the minor slaps on the wrist for cheating, it's worth it.

                • Would you guys really want to win a MNC knowing that Michigan was no better than USC, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, or osu? It would be like getting 100 percent correct on a test because you were given the answers ahead of time.

                  • I have some fucking awesome beach front property on Mars for anyone who thinks Bo didn't play numerous players who took extra benefits. He may not have known about it, but you're the ultimate fu fucking kool aid drinker/homer if you think otherwise. Lol.

Fact is, M has been nationally irrelevant for do many decades because they just aint good enough.

Anywho, whatever fantasy allows you to imagine your program is relevant. Heh. A lot like Notre Dame. And with Domino Dave, the two-sided helmet is soon to come.

                      • He spoke truth

No doubt in my mind that some players on Bo's teams, probably without his direct knowledge, receive illegal benefits of some kind. And that goes for Woody's teams too. It would be wickedly naive to think otherwise.

                        • I don't believe that Bo or Woody paid players to attend their schools.

If it happened, it was totally without their knowledge, and not with the "wink wink" stuff that "successful" coaches have gotten away with recently.

I'm 100% with you on that, Liney---not just in regards to Bo and Woody, but also in regards to CFB right now. Just as there have always been rogue programs in CFB for decades, there have also been honest programs and coaches that are 100% on the up-and-up. Problem is, those honest programs and coaches have become more and more endangered (as many have pointed out here and all over this forum) while cheaters prosper. Just look at the SEC and USC and Oregon and the SEC and "that" Miami and North Carolina and the SEC and Clemson and the SEC, etc., if you still need examples---they abound there!

                              • Its galling to watch programs who cheat, and knowingly cheat, get rewarded with conference championships and MNC appearances, even after having had NCAA sanctions on the programs. Watch USC this year. One year off probation, and they'll be in the MNC game. Just watch.

Then, OlieO will be the next beneficiary of NCAA sanctions. Once they serve this year's slap on the wrist, they'll make a MNC appearance, I'd guess, no later than 2014.

Oklahoma has done it. LSU has done it. Alabama has done it. Auburn has done it with the NCAA's blessings. Florida has done it.

                                Cheating pays off. In wins.

Would you guys really want to win a MNC knowing that Michigan was no better than USC, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, or osu?
No. But, I've been told, right here in this forum, that this is a "losers" attitude. If you're not regularly making MNC appearances, your program is a failure.
