Pretty funny to see Texas continue to throw stones at Nebraska over their exit of the Big XII... If the Big XII wasn't so toxic, they wouldn't have lost all of Colorado, Texas A&M and Missouri too. Take the blame you deserve, Longhorns.

It seems that both Texas and the SEC as a whole have forgotten about the whole give-and-take nature of getting along in a larger group. It's working so far for the SEC, but seemingly not for Texas.

Indeed. The funny part being that Colorado actually left first, and did so directly due to the fact they discovered Baylor was manuevering to take their spot on the burnt-orange bus headed to the PAC-10. Nobody seems to remember that. Then, as you state, following defections- ATM's in particular- have further eroded UT's claims.

Despite claims of the Big 12 emerging as a power conference again, I think we need to look at their additions; a Big East program, and a Mountain West program. When you trade Nebraska, ATM, Colorado and Missouri for that...IMO, that says all that needs to be said.

Is that directed at me? I don't see any fracture. I'm not impressed with the SEC's take on football or ethical conduct. My respect is inverse to the degree to which success comes from off the field actions like recruiting violations, poll gaming, negotiating access to championship games, etc. But I am extremely impressed with their overall ability to corrupt the system to their own advantage. I think it was a Jackie Mason joke about Richard Nixon: ``you gotta admire a crook who knows his business.''

The conversation was about Texas driving away its conference mates, it seemed you were projecting it onto the SEC as well, when the opposite is true, as schools are begging to join the SEC.

PHILADELPHIA -- The charity for troubled youths started by Jerry Sandusky more than three decades ago -- and through which the retired Penn State assistant football coach met the boys he is charged with sexually abusing -- said Friday that it is seeking court approval to shut down and transfer its programs to a Texas-based youth ministry that serves abused and neglected children.
The Second Mile said it has been financially crippled by the child-sex abuse scandal involving its founder and onetime public face and concluded after a six-month internal review that it had no other option but to close.
The State College, Pa.-based charity began the legal process of dissolving itself Friday, submitting a plan to Centre County Court that would transfer its programs and millions of dollars in assets to Arrow Child & Family Ministries, a charity that operates in Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, California and Honduras.
"While we are sad that the Second Mile will not continue running programs, we are heartened that the important work of helping children -- and their families -- reach their full potential will go on," the charity's interim President and CEO David Woodle said in a statement.

Haven't seen this posted .... may have missed it somewhere else on the board, but former WVU HC Bill Stewart died of a heart attack last week at 59 years old. I heard Don Nehlen talk about him this morning on XM college sports radio. Had a lot of good things to say about him in morning the loss of Stewart.

Don't know all the details but seems he really got screwed by the current AD, Luck, there when he was replaced by Dana Holgerson. Sad to see anyone that young kick the bucket.

Will Muschamp says one visit to College Station is enough
The coaches of the SEC's "current" 12 teams will no doubt tell you that they're delighted to have prestigious programs like Texas A&M and Missouri join the conference fold for 2012 and beyond, that the additions have strengthened the league and opened recruiting doors and that everything was swell but now is even more swell and etc.

But if they're really that excited for the additions, they've had a funny way of showing it.

First Les Miles offered that the Aggies and Tigers would "really not enjoy their welcoming" into the SEC. And then Tuesday night, Florida's Will Muschamp flashed back to his days as Texas's defensive coordinator during an appearance at the Polk County Gator Club by taking a shot at Texas A&M's College Station home.

"It will be a very SEC-like atmosphere," Muschamp began. "It's one of the few places in the Big 12 that I would say that about."

But the complimentary tone* didn't continue.

"You ever been to College Station?" Muschamp said. "It'll be the only time you go."

Our first response to this was a single word: Damn. The second one was to double-check the Gators' and Aggies' 2012 schedules, and sure enough, there we are: Sept. 8, Week 2, Florida at Texas A&M.

The Gators were no doubt already expecting a rude reception at Kyle Field, considering this will be the Aggies' first-ever SEC game and also considering that a program with Florida's record of success tends to wear a bullseye wherever it goes. And we don't want to make too much of a comment that was said at an informal meet-and-greet session and was clearly intended somewhat in jest.

All the same, taking an unprovoked (and arguably even below-the-belt) jab not at an opposing team but at the opposing team's home city is a quick and easy way to get the opposing crowd's fury up to absolute maximum levels. Muschamp's ties to the Longhorns and the role of those ties in his comment won't help matters, either.

Muschamp didn't make what was already a highly difficult road game that much more difficult ... but we have to wonder if scoring a few easy laughs on the rubber-chicken circuit was reason enough to make it any more difficult.

Alcorn State hires Jay Hopson

NEW YORK -- Alcorn State has hired former Memphis defensive coordinator Jay Hopson as its football coach.


The school announced the hiring Monday, saying on its website that it is the first Southwestern Athletic Conference program to hire a "non-black" as its head coach.
Hopson replaces Melvin Spears, who was fired in February after going 2-8 in his only season.


Hopson resigned from Memphis' staff in September 2011. He also has coached at Marshall, Delta State, Southern Mississippi and Michigan.


He played defensive back at Mississippi from 1988 to '91.

I'd like to applaud Alcorn State for its groundbreaking hire for the SWAC, but they've gone and hired Jay Hopson, so they deserve nothing but the scorn usually heaped on schools that hire blithering imbeciles.

The SEC is now encountering the problems of going to 14 teams...it's harder and harder to keep rivalries intact. Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia are demanding to keep permanent cross-divisional rivals on the schedule. Other teams like Florida and LSU are advocating to do away with them entirely, meaning Tennessee and Alabama would no longer meet every year or even with regularity.

The pod system can be a solution, IMO, but a lot of people don't understand it or want to resist it, for whatever reason. But divisions of 7 or 8 teams are unwieldy no matter how you look at it.
