Big Ten fields 25 sports, SEC 20... Fielding these extra programs isn't cheap, every college of course doesn't field a team in each sport, it'd be better to look at the average # of sports each program does at a lot of programs don't compete in every sport.

re: oversigning, M DIDN'T fill all its scholarship in the '12 recruiting class. They left one open scholarship that they didn't fill. Not sure what year that article is referring to...
In the B10 you can apply for up to 3 exceptions to oversign past 85 but only if you know your going to have players leaving to open up those spots, which you have to prove...
The SEC's silly 25 limit rule is a ridiculous attempt at stopping oversigning, you can sign up to 125 recruits in 5 consecutive classes.

SEC is losing their top recruits to SEC schools. There is quite a bit of talent in the mid atlantic (NC, Virginia, Maryland) to support their programs better than their on-field performance. I see the ACC as being very balanced; tons of mediocre programs in football that beat each other up.

The SEC simply wants to win more. They have no scruples when it comes to recruiting and roster management, and they're willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for the best coaches and facilities.
