  • With all of the DVRs out there, I'm surprised we haven't moved to a more soccer-ish model where the advertisements are on the screen during the game. I'd rather have that if it would take away a few commercial breaks per game.

    • Look at the stadiums, there is advertising everywhere during the game. Agree with the above, you'll see more stops/breaks for advertising before you see less, that is what pays the bills for everything.

I very rarely watch anything on tv these days that hasn't been dvr'd. Too many darn commercials. Almost more commercial time in some instances than content. That may not be fair to the sponsors but, to some extent, it's their own fault for driving up costs with things like 3 announcers, on field interviews, outrageous salaries, etc. that, for me, adds no value to my viewing experience. I just want to watch the game with a reasonably good announcer. Also, while many programs, and not just sports, stream their advertising, they also include additional and significant commercial time. I don't see that changing. If there's a way to advertise and make money they will do it and I don't think it will make that much difference if it interferes with the viewing experience.

              • Jamie sez : Problem is, TV ads pay for the entire sport of college football now.

No, the problem is football pays for ALL college sports now. Therein lies the problem. Gate revenue and concessions alone generate more income than football consumes. Bowl revenue is gravy. Merchandise licensing is gravy. Suites are gravy. Parking is gravy. AD donations for perks like the ability to buy away game tix are gravy. Football doesn't need tv, tv wants football. I stand by my suggestion for games breaks as offered above. Worst case scenario is that only big money advertisers would be able to buy the reduced ad time. So what? The big networks going say "fine, we won't broadcast"? Not gonna happen. Athletic Depts simply want to pay for all sports on the back of football fans. So long as they can assrape football fans, they'll gladly do it. Its like putting a child molester in charge of Boys Town.

I frequently refer to Ath Depts as money whores. They're really more like heroin junkies where its never enough. Its time to put them and tv into rehab.

Mac sez: ...regards to half-time, I do enjoy seeing some of the bands perform, even if it is for just a bit, and think it's a nice reward for the band members who work so hard during the year.

I couldn't agree more. I love halftime shows. I don't leave my seat during halftime. Trouble is, the last time halftime shows were broadcast is when Chris Schenkle was doing the play-by-plays. Now we get Mark May, Lou Holtz, and Pussburger blathering like idiotic magpies instead. I think I'd rather see commercials if I can't see the halftime shows.

Our Canadian pal sez: I take it that Ghengis doesn't like to pay bills, but who does.

Nah, I don't mind paying my way. Figure I spend a thousand bucks on tix and another thousand on in-stadium food concessions for my bottomless pit children. But I don't care for subsidizing sports I don't care about that have very little following like water polo etc.

Possible solution? Broadcast games on a 30 minute delay. No tv timeouts for the fans in the stadium and ADs can still do the deepthroat boogie for tv.

                  • WOW.. this is bold.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Auburn coach Gene Chizik's new contract allows him to be paid if there is an NCAA investigation into possible major rules violations, a departure from his previous deal.

Chizik's new deal, released to The Associated Press on Tuesday, merely says the coach agrees to comply with Southeastern Conference and NCAA rules and disciplinary procedures and cites Article 4 of the SEC's constitution outlining the commissioner's authority and Bylaw 19:8, which deals with enforcement.

The bylaw is under revision, and SEC spokesman Charles Bloom said it is not ready for distribution. Chizik's attorney, Russ Campbell of Birmingham, declined comment and Auburn officials had no immediate comment.

The old one signed in June 2009 included a stipulation allowing Auburn to suspend pay to Chizik if his program is being investigated by the university, the SEC or the NCAA for "alleged major rules violations or significant or repetitive violations."

Auburn has faced considerable negative publicity and NCAA scrutiny in the months before and after winning the national title.

The NCAA is investigating the recruitment of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton, whose father shopped him to Mississippi State in a pay-for-play scheme. Auburn has not been charged with wrongdoing.

Plus, four former players told HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" in a March report that they were paid thousands of dollars during their college careers.

Chizik was rewarded for winning a national title in his second season with a contract that places him among college football's highest paid coaches.

His new deal, which extends through 2015, includes a sliding-scale buyout that starts at $10 million if he's fired this season.

If Chizik wants to leave at any time, he'll owe Auburn $3.5 million.

He can make another $1 million in bonuses, including $100,000 for winning the SEC championship game, $50,000 for playing in it -- and the same amounts for making and winning a BCS bowl game. He'd make $200,000 for playing for the national title and $400,000 for winning one.

Chizik's coaching staff also received raises and extensions. Auburn's assistants will make nearly $4.1 million, only about $300,000 shy of Chizik and his entire staff's initial combined salaries.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn received a raise to $1.3 million after interviewing for Vanderbilt's head coaching job.

Defensive coordinator Ted Roof is the next highest paid assistant at $500,000, a 23 percent hike.

The coaches' contracts run through June 2013, though assistant head coach Trooper Taylor's $425,000 annual deal runs an extra year. Taylor would also get an extra $50,000 for each year he's still at Auburn the day after national signing day.

                          • Oregon cornerback Cliff Harris was pulled over driving 118 mph, on a suspended license, in a rental car.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly has suspended Cliff Harris indefinitely after the cornerback was cited for speeding while driving with a suspended license.

Bad enough I suppose but the added wrinkle is that a university employee rented the car herself and handed it over to he and his buddies. She swears they paid her to use the car and that they promised her only the other would drive...but does something smell a little bit here?
