Yeah, the reports from 2010 summer practices were that Tate was not doing the work he needed to hold onto his position. Which is too bad, though given what Rodriguez was trying to do on O I don't think there was much Tate could have done to hold of Robinson anyway.

Too bad since Robinson was injured so often last year we practically ran a two quarterback system.

The Forciers don't appear to be helping the situation any by reinforcing the idea of actions=consequences. Tate's older brother Chris had some issues at UCLA with Rick Neuheisel and he left that program.

One of the things that will be put on the table at the SEC meetings is the current Big Ten model. Big Ten schools are allowed to sign only the number of available scholarships plus three. So if a school loses 17 players due to graduation and other circumstances, it may sign only 20 on National Signing Day. In fact, the Big Ten regulates how many scholarships its schools are allowed to offer to three more than the available scholarships. If a school wants to over-offer, it must get permission. If it oversigns, that school must document what happened to every single player that left the program if they did not graduate.

In other words, the Big Ten keeps their coaches on a tight leash when it comes to this subject. I don't see that happening in the SEC and my prediction is that no change on the current policy will come out of the SEC meetings. Coaches believe they need to over offer and over sign as a hedge against players who don't qualify academically plus natural attrition. They want the option of signing an academically challenged player they know won't qualify, placing him in junior college, and hoping to get a good player in return. There are too many coaches in the SEC who don't want to give up that power. They also have the ultimate trump card in this debate: The current system has allowed the SEC to win five straight BCS national championships.

Some schools like Fla, Ga & Vandy actually follow the B10 model while a lot of others abuse the SEC loopholes (SC, Miss St, Miss, LSU, Ala, Aub, Ark, etc.)

Its good that the school presidents will be deciding on this issue as opposed to the athletic directors.

The Oklahoma football program was rocked today by the death of starting middle linebacker Austin Box. Box, 22, was found unresponsive at a house in El Reno late last night, and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in nearby Oklahoma City. He was pronounced dead today.

KFOR 4 in Oklahoma City was the first to report that the medical examiner's office confirmed Box's passing, but no details past that have been officially released as yet. The Tulsa World has reported that the medical examiner's office does not expect a cause of death to be known today.

According to a report by Fox 25 in Oklahoma City, the police report notes that Box took an unnamed "controlled dangerous substance," and that his death was likely an overdose.

Oklahoma president David Boren released this statement today:

"The University family is deeply saddened by the tragic death of student-athlete Austin Box. Our hearts go out to his family and friends."

Also, OU athletic director Joe Castiglione released this statement:

"Austin Box will be greatly missed by his many friends and teammates in the Athletics Department and all across campus. Grief counseling is being made available to members of the team and his close friends."

As The Oklahoman reports, head coach Bob Stoops is currently overseas.

Needless to say, this is horrible news for Oklahoma and the Box family, and horrible news for the rest of college football -- especially just days after the passing of Alabama lineman Aaron Douglas. 22 years is far too young for anybody to pass away, far too short a life to live...
