No one is saying that winning the MWC gets you into the playoffs is bad. Although, feel free to distinguish the MWC from MAC in a principled way. LMMFAO.

What I'm saying -- quite fucking clearly -- is that there should be no automatic seeding for conference champs. That each year CFB should try to assess seed based on strength the best they can. Like, you know, the NCAA Tournament. And the FCS Tournament. And pretty much every other NCAA tournament. I would think that's uncontroversial, but there are actual assclowns out there that think winning a conference is all you need to do to get a top 4 seed.

As for superconferences and the B10-SEC hegemony -- that's here to say. Ain't nothing you can do about that. We can, however, fix the CFP idiocy.

Fans arguing, "there's nothing wrong with the current system" simply don't get how structural changes to the current conference based system and play-off format could make the CFB season so much better. Of course, the current system could just continue out of it's own momentum - and that sucks.

Lots of competing interests is making change hard. Broadcast rights and how money from TV contracts are distributed are a big part of making change hard. I get that and don't claim to know how a competent (meaning not the NCAA) organization at the top will emerge to make this happen.

CFB programs (college presidents) need to collectively detach themselves from the NCAA and reorganize under some kind of commission that adopts structural changes similar to the organizational structure of the the NFL. This can't happen soon enough and my thinking is that the current CFB structure is just fine is wrong headed. Trying to tweak the CFP format every year neglects the obvious short commings of the current CFB conference structure in delivering the most competitive (best) teams to an end of season CFB, NC playoff is a huge waste of time and energy.

Well, you can fix the CFP easily -- and that will be done.

What you can't do is address the Portal and NIL which, in tandem, creates the issue that I think most people find most objectionable.

That said, there's certainly a theory out there that the Portal+NIL has "leveled" the playing field against the SEC programs that were brazen in paying players. And that under the current system, parity, at least amongst 20-25 schools, is inevitable. Whether that's good or bad...I dunno.

But, that's what's happening (IMO).

I would not go to 1-12, 2-11. I don't think the layoff is an issue. The bigger issue this year was that 2 of the 4 teams that got byes were, in no way, top 4 teams. The 3rd team that got a bye was offensively-challenged BEFORE they lost their allegedly 1st round NFL QB. And the 4th team ran into the team with the highest ceiling because the CFP seeding is asstarded.

So, the one thing I would definitely not "overconclude" on from this year is the the effect of the layoff for teams with byes.

That's phase two. The NCAA has defaulted to "not my problem" position on the much needed regulating of the Portal and NIL. In the process leaving this up to legislative action - that's BS. I hold that CFB needs a regulating organization apart from the NCAA and similar to the NFL. Going from there, probably simultaneously, set up conferences and divisions and address the disruptive character of the Portal and NIL. We all know, there are CFB teams that don't belong among teams that make up the FBS. Admittedly, I don't know how you separate the "wheat from the chaff."

We do know, the current conference set up resulted in weak conferences wanting a slice of the payouts associated with the CFP and the lesser bowls. I get that and that's not chump change in the current format. There has to be a better way to address that other than including second tier conference teams as sacrificial lambs for BIG and SEC teams for the sole purpose of scrimmaging those second tier teams then having SEC and BIG teams pay them for being just that.

Nobody will be bellyaching over making the easiest no-brainer common sense decision of all time to get rid of the 4 team auto-byes for conference winners. See DSL's post above about the PAC whatever. That league doesn't deserve ANY auto-bid frankly, let alone a top 4 seed should one of those schools stumble to a one-loss season.

I think the OSU v Texas game is your real Natty game. Its happening a round too early, but the winner of that game is the best team in the country, IMO.
