  • Jimbo Fisher reportedly getting fired as early as today

    Comment

    • Damn.

So is it going to be Deion Sanders to Texas ATM (literally $$$) time? The amount of oil money that university has access too… endless possibilities with the financial backing.

Curious what the payout to Jimbo will be.

      • I think Deion may be waiting for the FSU job to open up?

It would be a huge roll of the dice for ATM to go afger Deion. He hasn't even won a conference championship yet. And he's not winning one this year either.

        • Washinton & Florida State staying undefeated is likely keeping the Buckeye/Wolverine loser out of the CFP... Oregon State has a legit chance to beat Washington next week to open that door.

Potential Bama vs Georgia matchup in the SEC title game, the winner gets a CFP spot, 1-loss Georgia would need help to get in the CFP.

Texas has just 1-loss but will need help (any undefeated losing) to earn a CFP birth even if they win out. Texas' hardest game left is likely their Big XII CG (Oklahoma or Oklahoma St.)

          • Some things worth clarifying wrt the sanctions imposed on the U and JH

Definitions are important and a lot of posting on the interweb doesn't get the terminology correct. What will come of M's complaint against the B10 filed in the Trial Court of Washtenaw County is also poorly understood and the source of wild speculation..
            • The judge who evaluated M's motion for granting a TRO denied it. A TRO is like a 911 call and Conner told the caller, it's not an emergency. Where does it leave us?
            • Judge Conner has put a hearing on his docket for Friday, 11/17. After hearing arguments and motions (if any are filed) from both sides, the judge can rule on the spot or he can schedule another hearing. He has wide latitude here to impose or not impose a preliminary injunction.
            • He'll listen to both sides and decide, primarily on the basis of M passing the four-step test: (1) that the plaintiff has suffered an irreparable injury; (2) that remedies available at law, such as monetary damages, are inadequate to compensate for the injury; (3) that the remedy in equity is warranted upon consideration of the balance of hardships between the plaintiff and defendant; and (4) that the permanent injunction being sought would not hurt public interest.
            • If M passes the 4 Point Test, M will be asking the court to issue a Preliminary Injunction preventing the B10 from continuing to imposing sanctions on the U. These took effect on Friday afternoon and we know M is complying but wants to get Harbaugh back on the field for the Maryland and osu games. They will seek a Permanent injunction down the road.
            • IOW, the entire process of obtaining relief from conforming to the B10s sanctions takes a while. They'd beheld in abeyance pending the Judge's ruling on M's complaint.
IMO, Petitti rolled the dice hoping that the court would not issue a TRO. They didn't and now the B10 can delay things with various legal tactics and sit back, eat popcorn while the clock ticks toward the end of the 3 game suspension.

I think Judge Conner understands that a ruling that provides relief to the U warrants quick action via a Preliminary Injunction. I think he also is giving himself and his clerks a week to try to sort out whether or not Petitti has the authority to impose the sanctions he imposed. That requires legal analysis of one, but an important one, Michigan's argument that Handbook Rule 32 (contains provisions for the conference to defer to the NCAA), and not the Sportsmanship Policy procedures (grants Petitti the power to impose sanctions) govern this case. He also knows that if he decides not to rule on Friday 11/17, M is going to be SOL and the B10 well get what they wanted a 3 game suspension through 11/25 (the osu game).

Finally, a lot of things can happen wrt this case during the week before the hearing on 11/17. I expect will get some surprises.

            • Its going to eventually cost Texas A&M $76 MILLION dollars to fire Jimbo Fisher.

That includes a $21 million payment within 120 days, and then $7.2 million per year until 2031.

Shoot, I'd let someone fire me for $76 Million.

Most schools build a relief clause in their contracts with coaches that allow them to get out of the buyout, if the fired coach takes a new job within a certain period of time. Not this contract. They'll have to pay Jimbo every penny. Smart for him. Stupid for ATM.

Now, ATM has to go hire a new coach, which will cost them big money, because they intend to "go big". The article says this could end up costing them over $100 million.

Maybe they'll come after Harbaugh? ... LOL

Texas A&M fired football coach Jimbo Fisher on Sunday morning, a move that resets the paradigm for coaching buyouts and opens up one of the country's most tantalizing jobs.

                Ohio State is definitely out.

If Georgia loses to UAT then I think they get in ahead all other 1-loss teams. Except maybe Oregon.

                • Michigan/Ohio State loser needs A LOT of help, but it's not impossible. Georgia losing in SEC CG stays ahead of Michigan/Buckeye loser. Chaos does happen in the last two weeks of the regular season. Most likely outcome is the Michigan/Buckeye loser ending up at #5

                  • Talent, read this AND the comments. Those brush on venue, why this isn't a case for federal courts and the complexity of this case for Judge Conner.

I think in the end, its going to come down to interpretation of powers given to the Comish in the handbook and the sportsmanship policy. At least it should.

It would be a real bummer if Judge Conner punts. I dont think he will.

Some lawyers like to say that predicting what a judge will do is a fool’s errand, perhaps because every practicing lawyer I know has been completely baffled or burned by a judge’s decision. Part of this is due to the fact that lawyers take a side and advocate for it, and once you take a side, that influences your perception.

                    • I skimmed it. I’ll read it and respond tomorrow. But I raised the very point of enforceability out of state and told you what I’d advise my clients. Setting that aside, it’s clear the judge doesn’t want to get too involved. There are lots of reasons for it that I’ll mention.

One thing I’d point to if I were the B10 is the Juwan Howard suspension. M didn’t object. They implicitly acknowledged the power the Commissioner to act in that way. And that was IMMEDIATE. So, it strikes me that the M response would be “yeah but he was certain of what happened then” — which is now a factual issue, not a process issue.

I’ll read it but I’ve never thought M was on great legal ground and, honestly, if the judge agrees then it’s probably to M’s advantage that she punt as opposed to giving the B10 carte blanche.

                      • Have your voices heard. An Amicus Brief is being prepared by the M Alumni Association with a CA based law firm and will be filed with the Court as soon as it is completed. The link describes what's going on and how to submit your signature to it:

The law firm Rushing McCarl LLP, in partnership with local counsel, is writing a pro bono amicus brief supporting the University of Michigan’s efforts to block the Big Ten’s suspension of Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. We believe the suspension violates Big Ten rules while endangering the Wolverines’ pursuit of a Big Ten title and national championship.

                        • If I was Texas A&M and apparently held the idea that money isn’t an object… here’s the plan:

Highly unrealistic, but make a call to their agent just to ask if they love money:
                          - Nick Saban
                          - Kirby Smart
                          - Ryan Day
                          - Dan Campbell (Texas A&M alum)

Hard to get, but I can see a slim possibility. Big names:
                          - Dabo Swinney (Down year for Clemson + Dabo yelling at his own fans)
                          - Dan Lanning
                          - Urban Meyer
                          - Deion Sanders

Not as hard to get and maybe a decent idea:
                          - Kalen DeBoer

If I could assign a coach at Texas A&M for comedic purposes:
                          - Butch Jones
                          - BERT
                          AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

                              • Well, there is that. It'd be more like being pinch run for and then, as soon as you got to the dugout, being given a one-way ticket to the St. Lucie Mets in Florida A ball.

But, still, why would aTm pay CRD? Dude sucks.
