  • He definitely was a great back.

Which is why he didn't need the assist from Gilbert Marchman and Jerry Markbreit on the 'touchdown' scored at the 2 yard line.

And to make it worse these were the years when a mixed crew was used (Pac 10, Big Ten) and Big Ten official Gilbert Marchman insisted that the ball crossed the plane.

Of course, Marchman went on to be a trainer of new officials for the Big Ten. The good old boys take care of their own.

Jerry Markbreit was picked up by the NFL.

    • Well, as was the case with ever Bo bowl game, M wasn't playing for a national title -- just pride. So, whatever.
Rose Bowl was the big prize back then, nice retort though, did loops write that for you?

That's when it started. Bo's #1 ranked teams losing to the likes of Minnesota, Purdue and Wisconsin- followed by annual embarrassments in the Rose Bowl. They were like Roswell run by Watergate conspirators and funded by the Trlateral Commision and the Knights Templar.

The Rose Bowl was A big prize back then -- one that Bo almost never won, too. But pointing out that Bo never once played for a national title is certainly fair. I mean, I fully understand why M fans would discount national titles as being only of trivial significance given they have 0.5 less national titles than BYU in the past 70+ years. But to most schools they matter more than Rose Bowl victories. Indeed, when you go to Ohio Stadium you don't see a lighted marquee honoring the 1973 season Rose Bowl winners, but you do see them honoring the national title teams.

So, you know -- you M boys go ahead do M. It's what you do best.

                  • I like the rival sass. It’s a positive. Most of the BigTen bros are kinda incestuous with BigTen mutual love.

Not quite true- Michigan does in fact honor the Nattys and not the Roses. Granted, most of them date back to before any one of us not named Jeff walked the earth. So, your point has validity. How Bo NEVER won a Natty is one of those great mysteries- and we don't have a really good answer.

That's what we've got, but hey, it's better than what Iowa,, Whisky, Minnesota etc can offer up.

                        • And Bo was hamstrung many times by the Big Ten rule that only allowed a conference champion to go to a bowl game. He had an undefeated team that sat at home during bowl season because of the stupid rule. He had other teams that had only one or two losses that sat at home as well, while OSU also lost in the Rose Bowl.

SEC teams have won NC's without winning a conference title.

But I loved Woody's swing for the fences against Clemson.

                            • M's undefeated 1973 team wasn't winning the national title. Ohio State destroyed USC and didn't win it. Just a mere Rose Bowl win. Such is life.

                              • Yep. Incidentally, by and large, the 70’s were kind of a shitty decade. Outside of Big 2 football and some decent rock albums in the first half, there’s not a whole lot to be nostalgic about.
