Its an interesting article, where Niumatalolo talks about the disadvantages of coaching at Navy. He makes an interesting point when he talks about red shirting. The Navy requires students to graduate in 4 years, so red shirting isn't possible. But to me, that's a fairly easy fix. Why not let them have a 5th year when they are on active duty after graduation? Assign them to a unit near the academy, and let them have another year.

That seems like an easy solution for sure, but man, it is hard to get shit like that past some of the anti-sports guys in the military.

When I was Officer in Charge of Station Burlington in VT, the CG had a kid that was an Olympic cross country skier. The wanted to send him to my unit so that he could train. Apparently there are world class facilities in Burlington. He would have basically done nothing other than train for the Olympic and not have any other duties. We would have had to suck up what amounted to being shorted on a billet at a 25 person unit.
I was all for it. The crew was all for it. I
thought it was pretty exciting, but the push back from people with more juice than me was incredible. Lots of "that's not fair" and "if he's going to be in the Coast Guard he needs to be doing Coast Guard work" bullshit
They ended up not accommodating him and he got out of the Coast Guard.

A 5th year for academies should be an easy fix. Assign the player to the Academy on a temporary basis for the football season. There have to be jobs where a recent graduate could work, and also still be on the team. After the season is over, ship them out to a regular duty station. The service academies need to grow up when it comes to sports.

I was just scrolling through CFB Twitter after linking to it from an article about Mike Leach's passing. Texas Tech is REALLY pouring on the condolences. All their official accounts have memorials with effusive praise for their former coach and they displayed Leach on the scoreboard in the stadium (presumably to share photos of it on social media). Frankly, it's disgusting. They can go fuck themselves. Grief stealing motherfuckers. Pay the Leach estate the money you owe him and then act like you care.

I know you're talking about the Tech administration but I'm pretty sure the TT fans always stood by Leach and not Craig James & his prima donna son. Those two have some sort of real estate company now.

Not posting this to condemn Leach in any way but a lesson for those of us still alive ....... in about 90% of fatal heart attacks in males, there are warning signs. This is less so in females. That little twinge you might feel under your sternum when you're out there shoveling snow could be just that. You don't have to rush to the ER every time you have indigestion but chest pain needs to be addressed. Chest pain that includes shortness of breath, pressure and/or radiation down the left arm isn't the kind of warning signs I'm talking about her..... that's a call 911. Don't have your partner drive you to the ER. They are not equipped to resuscitate you if you go down in the car on the way to the ER. EMTS in an ambulance are. And FGS don't try to drive yourself there if you're alone. If you walk in to the ER, you'll be triaged with all the snotty nose kids, lacerations and non-emergent things wasting what could be critical time. If you go by ambulance, you'll get wheeled in through that entrance and get triaged ASAP.

Look, if you think you're getting warned or have risk factors for an MI, go see your PCP. Males have a terrible propensity to say, "it's nothing" and won't go get checked out. It will be easier to get an appointment with your PCP than a cardiac specialist and if the EKG or Cardiac Stress test he runs in his office is suggestive of a cardiac issue he'll get you priority to where you need to be. In an acute circumstance (and your PCP can make that determination), he'll call 911 and you'll be priority admit to the ER. If it's not acute, he'll send you to a cardiologist on a priority basis. From there you'll get a work-up and appropriate interventions, e.g. a cardiac catheterization (the gold standard) or optionally a Cardiac CT (it's a specialized type of CT).

Mike's death is terrible. It may or may not have been preventable and I'm not saying he blew it. But for all of you guys here, pay attention to signs and symptoms of cardiac stress.

All true, Jeff, but a few things that may indicate that it caught him unaware:

1) “Silent” MIs are very common. Depending on the study you look at (with men), it can be nearly half of all heart attacks.

2). And even if he did have some symptoms, with the coughing you have from pneumonia, you’re already dealing with ongoing chest pain. Ditto, shortness of breath, and some of the pain control prescribed to deal with those symptoms may mask other pain.
